Protect your head
... no, really. Yesterday I was out riding the absolute sweetheart draft horse gelding that I have a lease on. I ride him once or twice a week for a couple of years now and we get along splendidly. I was really confident nothing would ever separate me from the saddle while I ride the big guy. And then yesterday, while in a laid back trot, he stumbled or slipped or both. I think it was the quick move back up that catapulted me out of the saddle, over his head. I basically made a 180 degree flip and landed with my head first. I ritually wear a solid helmet when riding and yesterday that probably saved me from massive head trauma. I could really feel how heavy the impact was when my head hit the ground. There was exactly zero chance to catch this. There was also zero chance for a more dignified breakfall or so - I've been training in various martial arts for years and I really know how to fall safely. My head was the first thing that made contact. Wear head protection, folks. No matter how mellow your equine companion is.
