I've got a ~14h 5 year old pony in moderate work (just starting in eventing). The previous owner had him on free fed hay, lots of lush grass turnout and 4 cups of Strategy a day and he was a bit porky. Since purchasing him in June, I've slowly transitioned him to a new regimen, trying to keep lean muscle and balanced nutrition.
Current:
The issue is that he seems to be pining the loss of his high sugar Strategy and ignores most of his feed until the hay is gone. He does a bit better when the feed is wetted (just add a few handfuls of water to his feed bin), but since he's at a boarding facility this is sometimes missed.
Is there anything else I can add to entice him to the feed without adding a ton more sugar or calories? I'm thinking about trying one of the Standlee pellet products (maybe Timothy/Alfalfa pellets). Or does it look like I'm missing anything major?
