#mylittlepony - #General Fanfiction Discussion Thread
General Fanfiction Discussion Thread
This is the thread for discussing anything pertaining to Fanfiction in general. Like your ideas, thoughts, what you're reading, etc. This differs from my Fanfic Recommendation Link-Swap Thread, as that focuses primarily on recommendations. Every week these two threads will be posted at alternate times.
Although, if you like, you can talk about fics you don't necessarily recommend but found entertaining.
IMPORTANT NOTE. Thanks to /u/BookHorseBot (many thanks to their creator, /u/BitzLeon), you can now use the aforementioned bot to easily post the name, description, views, rating, tags, and a bunch of other information about a fic hosted on Fimfiction.net. All you need to do is include "{NAME OF STORY}" in your comment (without quotes), and the bot will look up the story and respond to your comment with the info. It makes sharing stories really convenient. You can even lookup multiple stories at once.

Hi there everyone! We are a discord server that is primarily for talking about Equestria Girls and things related! For now we are fairly small but we are looking to expand and meet new members to join us. With the end of the series coming we thought it would be appropriate to reach out to people to find those that still want to talk about it and discuss it with people who also enjoy it. Unofficial Episode Discussion Thread: Season 9 Episode 10 "Going to Seed"
So I realized that we will be in the middle of the Hiatus for a while and so a thought occurred to me. Some of the highlights of watching the episodes from Season 8 as they premiered was reacting and discussing the episodes with y'all in real time. We are now starting the Season 9 rewatch today.
So following up on our previous thread, is the My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Season 9 Episode 10 "Going To Seed" . So go watch via whatever means you can and come back to discuss this early episode below.
And here is a link to the Season 9 Episode 9 "Sweet and Smokey" from the other day if you want to chime in and discuss the precious episodes in case you missed those previous threads.
No really. Y'all are more then welcome to add/contribute to the previous discussions. Really.
I have compiled a few masterlists of all of the Unofficial Episode Discussion Threads we have discussed by each season we have watched them for easier access to comment on, read, look back on what we have said, and other such useful whatnots. I shall be creating Season 9's(that will be updated with each thread) soon.

Unofficial Episode Discussion Masterlist: Season 7
Unofficial Episode Discussion Masterlist: Season 8
Unofficial Episode Discussion Masterlist: Equestria Girls
Unofficial Episode Discussion: My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic- The Movie
Here is a link to the episode over on Dailymotion, I am unsure if it is on Netflix yet, so whenever you are ready go ahead and watch it, discuss it down below, and enjoy.
Going forward with these discussion threads we have this in store: Season 9, I shall also be making a masterlist for Season 9 as well as we go through it. We'll be doing these discussions on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Pretty soon we will have caught up with the show proper so when we do what will y'all be wanting to do these threads on? Should we wait until the Season 9 is over? Should we do the Equestria Girls Shorts and decide how? I will leave this up to y'all.

This Week on the Plounge (Still Con Edition)
Hello and again welcome to your weekly dose of 'This Week is much like most weeks': 'This Week on the Plounge' wherein I inform you, the fine folks of the mane sub, what's been going on at your favourite sister subreddit, the Plounge, this past week.
Wait, what is this Plounge you speak of?
The Plounge, or more formally the MLP Lounge is /r/mylittlepony's sister subreddit. Designed to be a place where you can free of the tyranny of rules 3 and 4. A chill place for bronies or anyone to talk in a SFW chat centric environment. It can be found over at /r/MLPLounge. (most of us browse by /new though). Oh and BPM is nice to have. Even if you're allergic to using emotes yourself you'll miss a lot of extra context without it.
What some casual conversation with a sprinkling of ponies? Come over to this introductions thread and meet some people. Don't worry there's also a topic so it ain't just "hi!" "hi" awkward silence.

#mylittlepony - #Weekly Submission Event - Digging Through the Archives
Weekly Submission Event - Digging Through the Archives
Seeing how Friendship is Magic is ending in a few months, I thought up a weekly submission event that'll take us down the memory lane of the fandom, and celebrate its output (inspired by /u/NewWillinium).
I call it, Digging Through the Archives.
The gist of it is we post media (images, animations, etc.) that were produced in a particular year (or time-frame) of the fandom. Each week (from Monday to Sunday) will focus on a different year.
Here's my tentative schedule:
- Week of S9E15-16 = 2010-2011 Submissions
- Week of S9E16-17 = 2012 Submissions
- Week of S9E17-18 = 2013 Submissions
- Week of S9E18-19 = 2014 Submissions
- Week of S9E19-20 = 2015 Submissions
- Week of S9E20-21 = 2016 Submissions
- Week of S9E21-22 = 2017 Submissions
- Week of S9E22-23 = 2018 Submissions
To participate, check what year the current week's focusing on, and dig through the archives of DeviantArt, Derpibooru, Equestria Daily, and/or your art site of choice to locate something of interest. After you do, submit the media here, with the tag [Archive YEAR]
or [YEAR]
, where YEAR is when the image was uploaded, prepended to the title.
I'd prefer if we focus on works that weren't submitted to this sub already. Especially from lesser-known artists. I plan to post at least 10 submissions from the past for 6 days a week. But even 1 or 2 archive posts per day is fine with me.
We've revisited the show and its accomplishments (see the Unofficial Episode Discussion Thread series), so let's do the same for the fandom's output per year. I'm sure we can do it!

#mylittlepony - #Do you think the Student Six were a good idea?
Do you think the Student Six were a good idea?
Do you think the Student Six were a good idea, especially this late in the show?
This isn't a question of whether or not you like them, you can like the characters and still think they've been poorly utilized, or even that it wasn't a good idea to introduce them.
I want to start off by saying that I was very optimistic about the Student Six after School Daze. Sure, none of them really wowed me, and I was disappointed by how easily they put their differences aside to become friends, but I was willing to put aside those first impressions to see what happened. After all, the series premier ended with the main six all the best of friends, but the rest of season one was spent creating conflict, building and growing the characters, and learning lessons.
Which is what I thought season eight was going to be, a soft reboot of the series, where the main six aren't put in the lesson spotlight, but instead are the mentor figures for the student six as they create conflict, build and grow as characters, and learn the lessons that the main six have to teach. We got nothing like that. We didn't get any episodes focused on them individually or in pairs, instead they learned all their lessons by... watching their teachers screw up. Amazing. We only got two episodes all season eight focused on them as characters, and neither of them delivered what I was looking for. Instead of episodes with internal conflict that challenged their friendships and made them grow as characters, we got A Hearthswarming Club, a cultural exchange and 'feel bad for Gallus, he's an orphan' episode, and What Lies Beneath, where they help each other face their inner demons.
And despite us never seeing them put anywhere near the amount of effort and growth in their friendships like the main six did, they're still chosen by the Tree of Harmony, not just to test them, but to save the day. And we still don't have an explanation as to why the Tree chose them, or how they were able to use the tree's power to release the magic. The entire finale never felt fully explained or even adequately earned.
And now, in the final season, these characters that were supposed to breathe new life into the show are just sort of there. They lack any kind of serious development and remain the basic ideas they started out as: Ocellus is the bookworm, Gallus is the antisocial rebel, Smolder is Ember Jr, Silverstream is an even more air headed Pinkie, Yona is a yak, and Sandbar is... a pony. Even in Season Nine, when we finally get episodes "focused" on them, we still don't learn anything about them.
I could keep going, but I'm rambling around a point I've already made. I don't have any dislike for these characters, that's kind of the problem. I've seen so little of these characters and know so little about them I can't make any sort of serious judgements on them. The Student Six were introduced too late into the show, and if the staff and Hasbro weren't willing to take enough of the spotlight off the main six to truly give these new characters their due, then they shouldn't have introduced the new characters at all, because all we've gotten out of it are barely established, massively underdeveloped caricatures that leave too much to be desired.
What are your thoughts? Do you think think the students are fine? Do you wish that more had been done with them, or do you wish that nothing had been done with them at all?

#mylittlepony - #The Fanfic Recommendation Link-Swap Thread
The Fanfic Recommendation Link-Swap Thread
So, because it's No-Pics Thursday (August 8th, 2019) today, you know what that means...
It's time for the Weekly Fanfic Recommendation LINK-SWAP Game thread to continue!
Anyways, THE RULES (read 'em carefully):
-
Post a link to a fanfiction you like (can be your own as well - it's okay to self-promote), with or without a short blurb.
-
Important: Reply to someone else's post with a link to a fanfiction you think they might like, based on their choices.
-
Put each of your choices in a separate post if you want to make sure to get a recommendation based on each one. You may reply to someone else's reply, either to you or to someone else. Please make long discussion threads, they introduce a healthy bit of exploration and can help us find new interests! And that's it!
PLEASE COMPLETE BOTH STEPS 1 and 2. Don't just show up and ask for recommendations if you're not willing to provide any. I'll start the first few threads myself, and reply with a gentle reminder if you forget.
Ready? Set? LET"S GO! Also, feel free to self-promote in here!

There are always things about the show I want to talk about, but I'd rather not always dedicate an entire full blown thread to it or it's never the right time to mention because no one would care. Maybe it's a thought that could be answered quickly enough to end discussion or something insignificant and stupid brewing in the back of your head for awhile! #mylittlepony - #The Bronycon Experience
The Bronycon Experience
This was my first time going to Bronycon. I've been part of fandom for 7 years.
First I need to state my position: I am, for lack of better words, a closet brony, my friends know, my family doesn't. However my one friend had been asking me to go for over 5 years, and this time I gave in.
Once we got to the Hilton they had taken the luggage out of the car and I was left with car till they returned. This gave me a lot of time to watch others coming to and from. Seeing people openly walk around with plushies and MLP clothes was a little unnerving.
This was the first shock point at which all I could think was, "WTF did you get yourself into." "You don't belong here, this was a terrible mistake."
When my friends got back I made a half joke about the situation and they laughed and said it would only get worse. That in time I'll get use to it.
That was a lie.
Fast forward to the first active con day.
Walking around I started to realize. There are a buck ton of people and most of them are wearing MLP shirts and or carrying plushies.
My world had become saturated with pony. Everywhere I looked was pony.
Even outside the convention hall, the banners and restaurants... more ponies. There were people with their plushies walking around Baltimore everywhere I turned. You sit down to eat and the table next to you has 4 plushies on it.
At that point I have realized: the whole world has gone mad and my reality as I know it, has cease to exist. Everything is backwards.
For me, ponies are an online thing only. It's only in my online persona that I'm labeled brony. It's like a game, a little fun thing to do. As a result, whenever I see something MLP related in the real world, it's always at a store and I never acknowledge its existence (On outside I have no expression but on inside I always smile a little). *Note: Only pony stuff I have is a silhouette Luna mouse pad and Luna pluhsie on computer. If you bumped into me at random you would have no idea.
But now its flipped. The internet has become reality. That first night when I went to sleep, my dreams were more normal and made more sense then my waking moments.
I don't know what is real anymore.
Side Note: I was blown away by the late night raves they held every night. When I saw all that equipment, and how late they stayed open, that's when it hit me just how expensive this operation was.
After talking and hanging out with random people I started to realize that this con meant a lot to some. It reminded me of when people joked about trying to find the portal to equestira.
Except for some, this was the portal, they had actually found it and it was real. It brought them to a place where they could be open about what they like and who they are.
But that portal was closing, and everyone was trying to get the most out of it before it was gone forever. Being there for the end was bitter sweet. I'm grateful for having the experience and all the fun. But at the same time, now I know something is missing. It's like a stain glass window that's missing one tiny sliver of a pane.
A part of me died that I didn't even know existed.
To long didn't read: Surreal
Personal favorite highlights:
-
Stuck in starbucks line for 35 mins to get friend coffee. It wasn't until 15 mins in that I realized the person 2 spots ahead of me was M Larson. Made corny joke to person next to me that "I didn't think Larson drank coffee, I thought he only drank Redbull cause it gives your wings"
-
The raves at night. (first two nights were best)

#mylittlepony - #How good are the castles of Equestria at defending against attacks?
How good are the castles of Equestria at defending against attacks?
Castles in the medieval era were more than just homes; they were fortified defenses against enemies in a warlike time. How well would the castles in Equestria handle an onslaught? Here's my amateur opinion:
Castle Friendship
Twilight's castle. Of course, she didn't have much say in the design, what with the castle being magically created by a tree. For that, it has some good points of strength but a few weaknesses.
Its biggest advantage is the fact that most of it is high above ground. An attacking force on foot might breach the door, but then they'd have to climb the stairs through the "trunk" to reach the defenders. That would bottleneck them severely and give the defense a chance to turn them back. While the attackers are still outside, there are plenty of windows to shoot arrows or missile weapons through, and they're good and thin to allow a castle defender to shoot and get into cover.
There are flat areas on the castle which could allow defenders to get out and strike at an opposing force, but only by exposing themselves. Although the one front and center is in an optimal position to drop things on an attacking force coming up the road. They would be a problem for The Pegasus Factor
In medieval battles air attacks wasn't a concern. It would be in Equestria. A force of attacking pegasi would have juicy targets to attack and enter the castle. At that point the trunk would become a bottleneck for the defenders.
Also, the two hills in the front would provide a good place to set up trebuchets and catapults. The one on the left in particular looks like it could reach the landing platform. The crystalline structure of the castle would have to be particularly thick because if the trunk was damaged, a catastrophic failure might occur and the whole thing just collapse.
Overall, I'd give it a 5.5/10 for defense. Build a fence around those hills or level them, and put towers over the flat bits, and it would be a lot stronger.
The Castle of the Two Sisters
Celestia's and Luna's castle is a ruin now, but it once stood deep in the Everfree Forest. I have a number of problems with this and I see several avenues for attack.
One advantage is that it's surrounded on at least two sides by a deep gorge. But the bridges across the gorge are permanent and sturdy, and worse, they're way far away from the castle! If an enemy approached, you'd either have to go out and fight them on the bridge (defeating the point of having a castle), or let them cross and establish themselves right on your doorstep. Then the castle is swept back from the door, meaning that defenders on either side have no chance to strike anyone attacking the entrance. I do like the crenellations down the sides, but all that does is dissuade an attacker from going to the sides and forcing them to keep at the middle, which is what you don't want.
The whole thing is built vertically, making for lots of easy targets for siege engines, which again could be easily brought close to the structure. Defenders in the high towers would not be safe and might succumb to fear.
It's also a sitting duck for a pegasus attack. An attacking force that took the hill with the observatory could use that as a launching and landing area with the castle being completely blind to it. Everything is exposed to the sky for aerial attacks. I'm honestly not surprised this one fell. 2/10.
Canterlot Castle
The current seat of Celestia and Luna that was built after Nightmare Moon was banished. Now this is a well-fortified castle. The mountain stream provides a natural moat, and it's wide enough to obstruct an invading army. Also helpful is that the road to the drawbridge curves. That might not seem like much, but a force marching up that way has to pinch in on the right side and spread out on the left side, and that can weaken a force, especially if they're trying to bring up a battering ram or to build a bridge over the moat.
There's a large gatehouse with a portcullis right after the moat, with towers on either side. The windows on the towers face front, while they should face inward. What you're trying to achieve is a bottleneck to trap the enemy while giving yourself as many opportunities to attack them when they're there. The window above the gatehouse is also useful, especially if there's a grate or open floor above it where hot water or sand (not oil; oil is expensive and useful when under siege) could be dropped on the attackers.
The small meadow to the right of the road worries me, but there's not a whole lot to be done about it.
A true advantage of the castle is that half of it is cantilevered over the side of the mountain (Canterlot…cantilever…there's got to be a pun there). If the castle came under siege from a ground force, the residents could hole up on that side of the castle and be safe from attack. There's simply no way to get any missile from the ground to that side.
It's even fairly well defended against pegasi. All of the towers have covers to hide under, and those covers deflect missile weapons away from defenders.
If you tasked me with trying to take Canterlot Castle from a force holding it, I might try to get a rockslide going on the mountain. But in the first place that necessitates scaling and taking the mountain, which is its own problem, and in the second it looks like the contours of the mountain would direct any falling rocks away from the castle and toward the approach. Even the very land contributes to the defense of this castle. 9.5/10, the princesses should feel quite safe.
