AKA one of the primary causes of the Canterlot housing crisis.
Or so I imagine, having tried designing a Canterlot residence floor plan for ponies.
Headcanon time:
Facing into the camera, standing on all fours and with their head held high, the average pony is roughly 4 ft tall, 1 ft wide, and 2 ft deep.
A fully grown alicorn (Celestia-sized) is about 50% bigger. That is to say, the dimensions are scaled roughly uniformly to 150% (6 x 1.5 x 3), horn excluded. Celestia's horn is about 1 ft tall, leaving the true size to about 7 x 1.5 x 3. Each wing adds about 4 ft to the width when fully flared.
Rearing up on one's hind legs increases the height by at most about 50% (horn excluded).
Canterlot city planning is run by the upper class and nobles, mostly unicorns.
Out-of-touch housing regulators (again, mostly upper class/noble unicorns), couldn't possibly tolerate or fathom a home that wasn't designed for the princess's size. Hence The Princess Standard™.
Where does that lead, you might ask?
The most basic design problem is a hallway. You probably don't want it to be one-way. The Princess Standard™ would thus dictate that the hallway must be at least 3 ft wide.
Except, of course, if you want to be able to turn. Humans have the very handy ability of being able turn around without changing much the amount of width taken up. Ponies, though? In a 3-foot-wide hallway, the average pony would barely be able to turn without blocking the other half (though they would be the only one to be able to turn at that point).
However, we're working with The Princess Standard™, damn it. Celestia would end up blocking the whole hallway. We can't very well expect the princess of all ponies to sit down on her haunches and turn while flashing her under-barrel to all unscrupulous ponies! Perish the thought.
Thus The Princess Standard™ ought to demand at least 4 ft for one turning pony, 5 ft for two turning ponies, or the golden 6 ft for two turning princesses. The former two, of course, are shameful and the hallways of a peasant, who would dare think themselves a princess's equal. Obviously then, the regulators should've settled for 6 ft.
But of course, any decent host would want to line the walls with the finest furniture or just have a bit of breathing space. Thus The Princess Standard™ defines a minimum width of 8 ft.
But what about head space? The Princess Standard would require at least a foot between a chandelier and the horn of a princess. If the average chandelier was 1 ft tall, this would leave us with 9 ft. However, the princess might need rear up in a show of force. This would push the ceiling to 12 ft.
"What about prancing, though?" you ask. While there are rumors of the princess partaking in such activities (and the gentry would never confirm such filth, good heavens), prancing like flaring one's wings is considered a faux pas. Thus 12 ft is The Princess Standard™ minimum ceiling height.
All of this leads to a cross section of 8 x 12 ft or 96 ft2. For a hallway. Consider that the average human residential hallway is roughly 4 x 9 ft or 36 ft2 or about a third that of The Princess Standard™. No wonder the princess refuses to grace the human world.
Next question: How big is a bathroom in floor space?
Let's assume it's rectangular. It has a toilet, a bath, a sink, and some closets.
The bathtub depends on if it is raised or built into the floor. Given that height is already a problem, only the most luxurious of buildings build it into the floor. Thus, The Princess Standard™ here will dictate specifically for a raised tub.
The sink wouldn't need to be terribly big. It would obviously be on the floor, about a hoof (4 in) high at most. Width is about 3 ft, possibly with a wide tap. Depth is about 1 ft.
The closet dimensions are harder to estimate, but going with beach towels as an estimate, each closet needs to be at least 6 ft wide and 1 ft deep, giving the princess a bit of breathing space for her wings at the beach. Doors (double in this case) are also 3 ft wide. Meaning that each closet takes up 6 x 4 ft.
There needs to be enough space to preen feathers. The Princess Standard™ thus dictates a minimum of 10 x 3 ft for preening space.
Each "path" inside the bathroom needs to be minimum 3 ft wide as well for maneuvering.
The door to enter the bathroom is minimum of 3 ft wide and thus requires at least a 3 x 3 ft to 6 x 6 ft area, depending on setup.
Organizing this bathroom in a sensible manner, we have (not to scale):
+----+ |D B| | PB| | PB| | | |TSCC| |TSCC| +----+
To meet the Princess Standard™, this bathroom would need to be at least 16 x 28 ft or about 450 ft2 or about 40 m2.
AKA about the size of a human city apartment with two rooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom.
All for a pony bathroom.
For comparison, the area of a human bathroom is about a quarter of that.
General rule of thumb (hoof?): The Princess Standard™ takes up 4 times the floor space, 4/3 the vertical space, or about 5 times the volume space of a normal human residence.
Or to put it another way, pony floor dimensions are twice that of a human floor dimensions.
At least in Canterlot.
And nevermind that wasted vertical space if you're not a unicorn. Somewhat wasted if you're a pegasus. Definitely wasted if you're an earth pony.
Thanks, upper class/noble unicorns. It's not like we can expand the city horizontally.
Hello and again welcome to your weekly dose of 'Aftermarket Plounging': 'This Week on the Plounge' wherein I inform you, the fine folks of the mane sub, what's been going on at your favourite sister subreddit, the Plounge, this past week.
Wait, what is this Plounge you speak of?
The Plounge, or more formally the MLP Lounge is /r/mylittlepony's sister subreddit. Designed to be a place where you can free of the tyranny of rules 3 and 4. A chill place for bronies or anyone to talk in a SFW chat centric environment. It can be found over at /r/MLPLounge. (most of us browse by /new though). Oh and BPM is nice to have. Even if you're allergic to using emotes yourself you'll miss a lot of extra context without it.
What some casual conversation with a sprinkling of ponies? Come over to this introductions thread and meet some people. Don't worry there's also a topic so it ain't just "hi!" "hi" awkward silence.

Hey everyone,
I feel a little stupid posting this at this point in my MLP career, but we all have to start somewhere, right...?
I've watched the main MLP show and the four EqG movies, but not much else. I know it's out there--I hear there's a lot of EqG content aside from the movies, for example--but I don't know what's out there, or where to get it from.
So, basically the title: what am I missing out on? And where can I watch it?
Thanks!
So, because it's No-Pics Thursday (January 16th, 2020) of today, you know what that means...
It's time for the Weekly Fanfic Recommendation LINK-SWAP Game thread to continue!
Anyways, THE RULES (read 'em carefully):
Post a link to a fanfiction you like (can be your own as well - it's okay to self-promote), with or without a short blurb.
Important: Reply to someone else's post with a link to a fanfiction you think they might like, based on their choices.
Put each of your choices in a separate post if you want to make sure to get a recommendation based on each one. You may reply to someone else's reply, either to you or to someone else. Please make long discussion threads, they introduce a healthy bit of exploration and can help us find new interests! And that's it!
PLEASE COMPLETE BOTH STEPS 1 and 2. Don't just show up and ask for recommendations if you're not willing to provide any. I'll start the first few threads myself, and reply with a gentle reminder if you forget.
IMPORTANT NOTE. Thanks to /u/BookHorseBot (many thanks to their creator, /u/BitzLeon), you can now use the aforementioned bot to easily post the name, description, views, rating, tags, and a bunch of other information about a fic hosted on Fimfiction.net. All you need to do is include "{NAME OF STORY}" in your comment (without quotes), and the bot will look up the story and respond to your comment with the info. It makes sharing stories really convenient. You can even lookup multiple stories at once.
Ready? Set? LET"S GO! Also, feel free to self-promote in here!
I've been thinking about jobs then this question popped into my head what are twilight's and Fluttershy's jobs? The others clearly have jobs rainbow is the weather manager (an official title which means she's probably paid by the city), rarity has her shop, pinkie most likely gets paid by the cakes for being they're baker and AJ most likely gets some sort of allowance from the money the orchard makes but what about twilight and Fluttershy (I know Fluttershy is an animal Caretaker but not a vet as ponyville already has one and I doubt pet sitting would be in demand enough for her to make much money)
Hi there! It's Thursday again and that means another chance to talk about what's been happening around here and how you feel about it!
Same as every other time, feel free to discuss whatever it is you'd like regarding our little subreddit good or bad. If you're unhappy we'll try our best to fix whatever problem you're having!
If you want to talk about the MLP fandom in general, that's fine too!
But some people may not want to talk about comics or anything else that hasn't happened yet, so you should be nice and hide those conversations from those people by using the spoiler tag.
If you don't know how it's as easy as making an emote:
>!It has ponies!!<
And if you're not wanting to discuss the subreddit or community specifically you can also check out the weekly off-topic thread here!!!!!
Hello everycreature may I welcome you to the 27th Edition of the Fimfiction Book club! This Week we shall be announcing the new book to read as well as sharing our Final thoughts on "The Witch of Canterlot" by MagnetBolt.
This is a bit of a special one for me as the previous stories we have read from this author have all been well received in the past here on this book club, whether it be "The Witch of the Everfree" and "Twin Twilight Tales", I think that these may have been THE most popular stories we ever did here participation wise. And now we FINALLY have a sequel to "The Witch of the Everfree" with "The Witch of Canterlot".
So let's give our Final Thoughts on "The Witch of Canterlot" by MagnetBolt shall we?
And if you really liked the story feel free to leave a comment to let the author's know. Trust me as a writer myself I know just how much that is appreciated.
Also a link to the previous edition of the book club here, Official Fimfiction Book Club: 27th Edition Current Thoughts Discussion on - "The Witch of Canterlot" by MagnetBolt. . . .
So because nopony requested anything special like I asked nor suggested anything I shall just go ahead and decided whether to go with the next story on the poll or to do a some one shots again. I'll let y'all know tomorrow
There are always things about the show I want to talk about, but I'd rather not always dedicate an entire full blown thread to it or it's never the right time to mention because no one would care. Maybe it's a thought that could be answered quickly enough to end discussion or something insignificant and stupid brewing in the back of your head for awhile! Anything you want to throw out to r/mylittlepony and say your piece!
Is there anything you've wanted to mention lately but never got around to it? Anything you want to speak up about for a bit? Any pony topic at all?
So over the years here we have all seen and talked about Season 5's "The Cutie Mark Re-Mark" again and again and again and again. It was simply an episode filled to the brim with cool ideas, cool action scenes, and a great redemption.
However I have noticed over the years that there are really only two of the timelines that tend to get discussed with any kind of serious interest. The Nightmare Moon timeline, where it seems that Nightmare Moon never lost in the first place (banishing her sister away instead), that is . . .strangely idyllic and where she has members of the Mane 6 serving her. . .
And the Grimmest Darkest Timeline where there exists only unending ceaseless War with King Sombra's Crystal Empire, where at the cost of life and limb the ponies of Equestria are barely holding him and his forces back even with Princess Celestia on the frontlines.
Both of these timelines have been explored extensively by the fan community over the years and it has created some amazing artwork and fanfics. . . but you know what other major timeline we see that tends to be neglected by both the fans at large and fanart community?
The Chrysalis Wins timeline. The first of the alt timelines that Twilight and Spike visit where upon they are immediately set upon by survivors of Chrysalis's invasion . . . including a bloodthirsty aggressive Fluttershy.
Under the rule/leadership of Zecora the survivors of Equestria trained, lived, and struggled to find some way to fight back the Changelings. . . and apparently they were doing a decent enough job for it that Chrysalis then led her entire swarm to attack the ponies . . . only to say that the rest can flee. . .if they handed over Zecora. Zecora. . . a lone Zebra Shaman who until recently lived alone in the woods and managed to create a rebellion against the Insectoid queen's desires of total conquest.
And the ponies refuse . . . instead they send Twilight back to the map to try and fix things so that this timeline never happens while they charge and fight the changelings, the last we seeing of them being Zecora and Chrysalis charging into a full on brawl against one another.
I find this to be a incredibly under used, underutilized, and under-expanded upon timeline in all of Ponydom. What if we explored this timeline? How might life in Zecora's village might be like in the day to day? What changed Fluttershy to be as she is? What happened to the Princesses? Why does Chrysalis consider Zecora such a threat? Could their be other enclaves free of the Changelings? Does this dominion expand to the Crystal Empire or would Sombra rise as the only dominant force to challenge Chrysalis's rule might to might? How suspenseful could stories in this timeline be with such a paranoiac and justified fear of Changeling incursions?
SO many things that one can explore in this timeline that just gets ignored in favor of the other two major timelines that we have all enjoyed. But that's just my thoughts. Why do y'all think this timeline has been somewhat ignored compared to the other two? Do you have anything you'd love to explore in it? Or see explored? Is there anything you want to talk about this specific timeline?
This is the thread for discussing anything pertaining to Fanfiction in general. Like your ideas, thoughts, what you're reading, etc. This differs from my Fanfic Recommendation Link-Swap Thread, as that focuses primarily on recommendations. Every week these two threads will be posted at alternate times.
Although, if you like, you can talk about fics you don't necessarily recommend but found entertaining.

Hello!
Back in the early days, the fandom produced a lot of rom hacks and I'm trying to build a list of these for a project of mine. This ranged from quirky sprite modifications to fully-fledged projects.
Unfortunately, it's quite hard to track down nowadays. I remember for instance seeing a Sonic rom hack with ponies wandering around (not replacing the existing characters), done using the ASM disassembly of the game to add extra behaviors and recompiled to run on the original hardware. I'm not sure if this file is still even available on the internets nowadays.
Do you know of any great rom hacks that are still around?
Imagine that, in an alternate universe, G4 was about Celestia, Luna and four other ponies studying under Star Swirl's tutelage (at least until he disappears at the season 2 finale).
Over 9 nine seasons, we follow the Royal Sisters from fillies to adults (which means that there are a handful of time-skips) as they have adventures, defeat villains, make friends, learn lessons, take over Equestria, etc.
Throughout the series, Luna's jealousy of Celestia is initially played off as a joke/minor character flaw, but it grows more noticeable and bitter (particularly after they defeat Discord and Celestia gets all the credit) until the final season, where she becomes Nightmare Moon and is banished for 1000 years.
The series finale ends with a flashforward, showing Celestia sending Twilight Sparkle off to Ponyville after Twilight learns that Nightmare Moon is supposed to return.
How would people have reacted to Luna ending the series as a villain?
What would people likely think about Twilight Sparkle in the brief few scenes that we saw her in?
We've seen what the pony version of 'Murder on the Orient Express' and 'A Christmas Carol' looks like, and a variant of 'Treasure Island' in the comics. What other stories from classic literature would you like to see told (or retold) in the future with ponies?
I think it would be cool if they could sneak in some Poe. Perhaps a version of 'MS. Found in a Bottle' or 'The Masque of the Red Death'. Obviously since these would be pony versions they wouldn't be as dark as their source material, but I just think it would be a neat set up.
That or maybe something by Ray Bradbury. I could easily see a plotline similar to 'Something Wicked this way Comes' in Equestria.
If you spend at least $20 on their website on Tails of Equestria, you get the Starter Set for free. It's not a one time deal, its every time. You can get yourself one the first time, then give a friend one the next. Unfortunately, it is shipping from Europe, so you will probably pay anywhere from $15-$25 for shipping if you live outside Europe. Regardless, it's a good deal.
