This is the thread for discussing anything pertaining to Fanfiction in general. Like your ideas, thoughts, what you're reading, etc. This differs from my Fanfic Recommendation Link-Swap Thread, as that focuses primarily on recommendations. Every week these two threads will be posted at alternate times.
Although, if you like, you can talk about fics you don't necessarily recommend but found entertaining.
IMPORTANT NOTE. Thanks to /u/BookHorseBot (many thanks to their creator, /u/BitzLeon), you can now use the aforementioned bot to easily post the name, description, views, rating, tags, and a bunch of other information about a fic hosted on Fimfiction.net. All you need to do is include "{NAME OF STORY}" in your comment (without quotes), and the bot will look up the story and respond to your comment with the info. It makes sharing stories really convenient. You can even lookup multiple stories at once.
Hi there! It's Thursday again and that means another chance to talk about what's been happening around here and how you feel about it!
Same as every other time, feel free to discuss whatever it is you'd like regarding our little subreddit good or bad. If you're unhappy we'll try our best to fix whatever problem you're having!
If you want to talk about the MLP fandom in general, that's fine too!
But some people may not want to talk about comics or anything else that hasn't happened yet, so you should be nice and hide those conversations from those people by using the spoiler tag.
If you don't know how it's as easy as making an emote:
>!It has ponies!!<
And if you're not wanting to discuss the subreddit or community specifically you can also check out the weekly off-topic thread here!!!!!
Greetings everybody and welcome to the end of our first ever Intermission Week for the Fimfiction Book Club!
So over these past few months we have covered many stories that unfortunately some of our members have been unable to devote time to reading or finishing. So I asked around and I've decided to do something new to help out. This won't be a regular thing mind but it will come up every now and again when the majority of folks think it is time for another.
So Intermission Week shall be a time where, for the period of 7 days, our participants in the Book Club shall go back and reread, finish, or get to reading some of the stories that we have read in the past to discuss at the end of the week. If you have already caught up then go ahead and read whatever you want so that we can discuss it.
So what did everyone read this week and get caught up on?
And I would be remiss to not include a link to our previous thread. So here is the link to the 13th Edition Full Book Discussion: "Changeling Courtship Rituals" by Codex Ex Equus
So I hope y'all had fun this week and enjoyed the intermission for tomorrow morning we shall be jumping right back into the swing of things.
As a fandom, will we be celebrating the royal sisters at the next summer solctice instead, like in the show?
There's something that's been bugging me for a long time, I just couldn't put it into words. That is until I saw the episode about the trivia game and Spike drops this line:
Do I have to do that thing where I list all your successes as Princess of Friendship to put things into perspective...
Multiple times have they pulled that previously, where they start listing accomplishments of a character as an attempt to cheer them up, as if they were pigeons and suddenly forgot.
As a method for motivation, this is total bogus.
Validation is a big part of support. I'd wager to say that it's the main thing. Making the person know, that they're not wrong in feeling that way, that it's perfectly understandable. "Putting things into perspective" only invalidates their feelings, most likely making them feel even worse in the process. Because now they not only have whatever problem they were previously having, they also have to worry about feeling stupid.
The girls straight up make fun of Twilight for being worried about ruling a country.
"Oh she's tWiLiGhTiNg! Let's tell her how stupid she is being, that'll get her confidence back!"
That's when I realized, that this is part of what's been bugging me. I always liked the show for how positive, but not stupid it was. That it had a good vs evil narrative, but wasn't bland and generic with it. It had a positive message, but also recognized that perfect positivity doesn't exist and things will be hard and that sometimes you have to do something negative, to truly get a positive impact.
Now it seems a bit more mean-spirited in some way and the positive bits seem all that more vapid and shallow.
I could probably go on and analyze recent redemption arcs and how they fit into this change in the overall feel. Or how lessons are being handled, or how the elements of the harmony have been treated. Even the comedy seems to have went from self-aware, but still cute, to straight-up self-parody and even just genuinely mean in some cases. Or how the meaner attitude may contribute to the bad guys ending up as more engaging and entertaining characters.
That would take ages though and I still haven't put a firm finger on the subject. But I definitely noticed a change in how characters try to motivate each-other.
I now realize that I mostly have just been rambling, but I do wanna talk about it.
So I must ask: Has anyone noticed this sort of change in attitude as well? Am I finding the right thing in the right spot?
In what other ways have the show's overall mood changed?
There are always things about the show I want to talk about, but I'd rather not always dedicate an entire full blown thread to it or it's never the right time to mention because no one would care. Maybe it's a thought that could be answered quickly enough to end discussion or something insignificant and stupid brewing in the back of your head for awhile! Anything you want to throw out to r/mylittlepony and say your piece!
Is there anything you've wanted to mention lately but never got around to it? Anything you want to speak up about for a bit? Any pony topic at all?
Ahem. Except for 69 69 69 6669 69 696 696 96966 696 69 69 69 69996 69 69 69 69 69 696 69. Not that topic. I'm watching you people...
So I ran out of ideas for threads and came up with this at the last moment soooo. . ..
Why not celebrate the foils of our favorite ascended Alicorn Princess? The characters that we compare our main character to in terms of personality, power, and their initial ignorance of friendship.
The Great and Powerful Trixie has ever been the most popular foil to Twilight Sparkle, first come first serve and all that, and she never ceases to amaze and wow us in her appearences.
First student of Equestria, likely was being raised to become an Alicorn or be the Element of Magic, Sunset Shimmer was a prideful bully who sought to get revenge on Celestia for casting her out. . .and then over the course of several movies, shorts, and specials turns out to become best pony. She is perhaps the most fleshed out foil of Twilight Sparkle.
Starlight Glimmer is another such pony who can be described as a bit of a middle ground between Trixie and Sunset in that she is one of the most powerful creatures in the show and is the only one that Twilight did not ultimately beat . . rather Twilight offered a open hoof in friendship and so began Starlight's seasons long journey to become a better pony herself.
There is also Moondancer but who really cares about her. . . just kidding. Honestly Moondancer differs from the rest of the Twilight Foils in that she is the most down to earth and . . . .understandable of her counterparts. She and her situation is very grounded in reality and how one's actions can harm another even without your knowing it.
. . .Does Tempest count as a foil? Or Sci-Twi? Like yes Sci-Twi is a direct counterpart of Twilight but she's kind of her own person with very disparate and personal fears and dreams? She's more of a foil to Sunset Shimmer then Princess Twilight.
There is also Twiscream but we all know what she was about.
So what have you? Do you want to celebrate Twilight's foils with me? Who is your favorite of the foils and why do you appreciate them so much? And how do you feel about the rest? Did I miss any that you can think of? Can you think of anything to talk about at all inr egards to these great ponies and characters?
Every time a there is an invasion of Equestria, I wonder, where is the army??? Every time the bad guys of the season dooming equestria if they are not stopped, where is the army?? And the royal guard does not count. If they can get tossed around like rag dolls, do they even have any training? Twilight has done more then some of the unicorn royal guards at times. Why don't the princesses have some scientists develop magical super weapons of some type? If each season is a year in the shows timeline, equestria gets invaded at least 1-2 times a year. Plot seems responsible for lack of an army and what not but still it would have been nice to see the royal guard or army give more of a try in the background.
Edit: Cannons are cannon. Why not fill them with rocks or use them to startle the enemy?
So we have had a LOT of King Sombras over the years of varying moods, temperament, and lucidity. Some were Good, Intelligent, and kind to a fault. Others were Moody, somber, bitter, and prideful.
Still others were self sacrificing, evil, and feral. Another more recent one was Prideful, Arrogant, Smug, and dangerously cunning and powerful.
But let us say that there is a fracture in the time Space Continuum and all of these Sombra's were knocked around and thrown into a locked room together? How would each of these Sombra's react to seeing other hims? Would they be angered at the sight of these pretenders?
Would they take accept grimly that in all timelines or worlds that they are monsters? Would one proclaim themselves as the only true Sombra? How would each of these Sombra's react to eachother and their behaviors and attitudes?
And how would the Good King Sombra react to seeing not only his alternative selves . . . but his own future evil self as well?
Give me your thoughts down below! I am interesting in where your imaginations will take you.
