#mylittlepony - #Honorifics of pony society?

Honorifics of pony society?

Based on a conversation I had with /u/Trerrysaur last week: What kinds of honorifics do you think pony society uses?

On the face of it, it's a simple question - we've seen them use "Princess", "Lord", "Doctor", and so on as titles, but in the show itself it pretty much ends at that. This, I think, can be directly traced to the fact that the writers live in North America - where cultural use of honorifics is extremely limited (typically to formal situations) - and indeed many fans also live in Western countries where this appears normal to them.

But, for a moment, if we assume that ponies do not directly ape modern Western culture in this respect - what kinds of honorifics do you think they would use? Consider:

  • Ponies may have a family structure different from that of modern Western society. Fans have theorized about different kinds of herd-esque structures, or you could go for something else entirely. What positions might be respected in these?

  • What spiritual or pseudo-religious movements might have their own honorifics, and what would those titles represent?

  • What about cultural differences between the tribes? We've seen that they had a monarchical, militarist, and pseudo-democratic society respectively; would those produce any unique titles or name-shifts? Do any of the tribes adjust the way they speak when talking to another of their own kin, versus a different tribe? Talking to a pony, versus a non-pony?

  • Heck, what about non-ponies - griffons? Dragons? Changelings?

Remember: Honorifics can be more than a title. They can also be a modification to a name, or a certain way of speaking to someone. Go wild with your theorizing!
