#horses - #PSA: Heat Stroke in horse’s-symptoms & treatment

PSA: Heat Stroke in horse's-symptoms & treatment

A wonderful observant barn worker saved a heavily muscled horse's life today at my boarding facility.

She was walking by his stall and noticed his panting and dilated nostrils. He also had a very worried look on his face and saggy dehydrated skin under the front legs.

Just wanted to share what we did and remind everyone to keep an eye on your trusty steed this summer.

First we called the vet.

Next we started hosing him down and put fans on him.

Hosed his groin, chest, belly especially well.

Massaged Ice packs on his neck, jugular veins and forehead. (He loved this part btw)

Here's a link to signs and treatment: https://aaep.org/horsehealth/heat-stroke

Glad she noticed him- he hadn't been exercised and was in a well ventilated barn in the shade.

So please everyone be vigilant! But stay cool and have fun of course! :)
