Are Changelings Plants Rather Than Insects?

It might sound ridiculous given the dragonfly wings and insect-part-naming scheme for most of the named Changelings, but there is at least some indication that the Changelings origins are far more botanical than even they may realize.

Consider that in the comics the Changelings are depicted as being born from a withered tree that was soaked in the runoff from a cemetery and grew warped and twisted with magic over the years. The swarm is shown bursting forth from inside the tree on mass, a buzzing black cloud of pony shaped insects.

Consider also that in the show Chrysalis seems to know of a spell to animate trees and give them the form and shape of ponies. The spell is not perfect of course, as the clones seem to lack the positive attributes of their originals, but they are a close enough facsimile to fool the real thing and when the Tree of Harmony 'destroys' them they revert to harmless pieces of wood.

If the Changelings are in fact plant rather than animal based it would go a long way to explaining their colorful change after the hive decides to share love instead of steal it. Nearly every changeling seems to have a base coloring of grass, leaf, or moss green and then their eyes and extremities like their wings and shells that come in more striking colors like flowers or fruits. Even before they transform the Changelings have a withered and warped look to them, more like a gnarled piece of wood riddled with holes.

The concept of 'plant' animals isn't even foreign to MLP, where creatures like Timber Wolves, Timber Bears, and Cragodiles are common place.

So what do you think? Are the Changelings really a race of plant creatures with insect-like qualities?
