I'm working at a horse farm with no previous experience or training around horses. The horses are so sweet and curious when I work around them but I can't help but be terrorfied of them just because of their size. How do I work safely around them?
Basically I'm a stall cleaner and I often have to clean stalls with horses in them. I never received any training on how to do this and although the horses are really sweet animals, coaxing them into moving and working behind their hind legs is really intimidating to me just because of their size.
How can I make sure I'm safe around them? All I know to do is gently say their name as I move about the stall so they stay aware of me and my position, and I try not to make any sudden movements. In order to work I have to close the stalls behind me, so even though they've all been really nice animals so far I'm worried that if one of them got spooked with me around I wouldn't be able to get away or calm them.
Basically I just want to know how to act around the animals. The people I work around are really a much hardier sort than me and assume that its common knowledge.
