I'm putting my horse down tomorrow, I've had him since I was 11. How do I get through this?

My horse is 17 and has had a lot of lameness issues that just aren't resolving, after talking to several vets we have decided the best thing is to put him down.

This horse has been my rock and my coping mechanism for most of my life so far. I know eventually I'll be okay, but I don't know how I will make it through the next couple of weeks. I can't stop crying. I know this is the best thing for him but I keep trying to convince myself he'll get better if he has more time (but all vets agree that he won't even be pasture sound). I've grabbed plenty of mane/tail, have been spoiling him rotten for the last week, and am bringing all his favorite treats. It's so freaking hard.

How do I get through this?
