Best Ways to Keep Older Horses Comfortable & Sound?
Hi everyone, I've got a very spunky ex-event horse turning 24 this year. I'd love your advice on methods for keeping him happy and healthy in his old age!
He's been in a care lease (in full training) for the past few years, but I'm getting him back in March. I'll coordinate w/ his new barn manager about his care, but I really want to hear from some other older horse owners too about what has worked for them.
Some context: He'll be in light to moderate work ~5 days/week with some occasional low jumping. He'll also get daily turnout, weather permitting. He's currently sound and fit, but has the usual stiffness and arthritis that come with old age. For at least the past 5 years he's been on a pretty steady regimen of monthly Legend injections, a glucosamine supplement with his feed, and occasional hock injections and chiropractic work. He also has a Back on Track blanket but I'm honestly not sure how much good it does.
He's always been in a full care situation with someone carefully watching over him (and primarily, my parents and trainers making decisions about his care), but now he'll be in a less intensive program where I'll be making a lot of those choices. I just want to make sure I'm doing right by my horse.
Is there anything else I should be doing to make sure he's comfortable in his body? Any feeds or medications people would recommend? I've heard good things about Pentosan and Previcox, but have never actually had experience with them myself.
Thanks in advance!
