PTSD symptoms after accident.
Hello r/horses! It's weird that I find myself posting here about this but I figured I'd try. I apologize if something like this is not allowed. If it's an issue I'll delete the post.
In April of 2016 I was thrown from my horse into the metal railing of our arena. I was wearing helmet but still sustained a pretty severe concussion that caused behavior changes. I took the required time off from riding and and other activities that might further impact my brain injury but got right back in the saddle as soon as I was given the okay from my doctor. I continued to ride without issues for the next 9 months or so (had some falls during that time).
Rewind time a bit. Shortly after my accident I broke up with my boyfriend for seemingly no reason (behavior changes from concussion caused this). The story is quite complicated but I won't get into the details. After he left I was diagnosed with depression right around the time I really found myself struggling to ride.
Concussion > Breakup > Depression > Anxiety/PTSD. I hope this is making since so far.
Anyways, there started to become a point where I would have severe anxiety attacks when I got on my horse which turned into them when I went to get my tack out. Eventually the attacks started coming when I went to go get my horse from his paddock. From there the attacks started as soon as I stepped out of my car and now I can even drive to the barn without having one.
At first I thought this was just severe anxiety but with it becoming more and more difficult for me to even get to the barn my therapist (who I have been seeing for a while now because of these issues) said that it sounds like symptoms of PTSD (with all of my other non horse related symptoms...sleep, appetite, loss of interests, etc.
I guess my question is, had anyone ever experienced an traumatic event, that occurred from something horse related and what did you do? I own a horse, I no longer ride (I kept trying for a while but I would break down). Interesting bit of information. I can ride other horses at a different facility and have no issues (time doesn't permit this to happen and I don't enjoy it but I thought it might be important to put that out there).
I'd love to hear any similar stories and to get advice.
