I have a coffee riding on this bet. He's a ridiculously competitive and stubborn man.

His source is an article about "the Western States 100 Marathon" written by some professor in Pennsylvania (I'll try and find the link)

This is what i have so far.

NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY http://aces.nmsu.edu/pubs/_b/B711/ "Evaporation (sweating) is the most important cooling mechanism for the horse" Source: Jason L. Turner is Associate Professor and Extension Horse Specialist.

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA https://www.extension.umn.edu/agriculture/horse/care/managing-horses-during-hot-weather/index.html "Normally, horses cool themselves by sweating." EQUUS https://equusmagazine.com/management/how_horse_keeps_cool_062408-10663 "About 85 percent of the heat loss will be through the skin surface all over the body, and about 15 percent through the respiratory tract," Source: David Marlin, PhD, of Hartpury College in Gloucester, England, an equine exercise physiologist who helped prepare standards of care for horses competing in the 2008 Olympic equestrian games in Hong Kong.
