Falling off
This may seem like a dumb question, but I really need to get my mind around this.
My history is that I've been fairly interested in horses for most of my life but never had the opportunity to own one. I've ridden a fair number of times, with friends, but have never fallen off.
Now, I also happen to be a 47 year old male, and at the age of 44, I had a minor motor scooter accident which was not my fault. I was on wet roads and making a corner at low speed. A car decided to pull out in my path and I had to accelerate to avoid hitting the car. Accelerating on a turn on wet roads is practically a guarantee for tipping on your side.
So I fell on my side and ended up getting a broken collarbone and six broken ribs. It was a pretty nightmarish recovery for 2 or 3 months. It gave me an appreciation for how fragile our bodies are because again, that was not what I'd call a "bad fall" or at high speeds at all.
So it has me thinking... A horse can go much faster, and a fall would be from much higher. It kind of makes me really nervous about the idea of falling off because I don't want to go through all that again with breaking ribs and whatnot.
But I do hear that people who own horses fall off fairly regularly. Having your own means you ride much more often than I've ever had the chance to. And a horse is a thousand-pound reactionary animal rather than a fairly predictable machine. How is falling off a horse different than falling off a bike? Is it something I just shouldn't worry about? Maybe it's how you can catch yourself or something. I'm really new at this, so I'm just hoping for some insight from you all, who have likely experienced these falls and not gotten seriously hurt.
