When/why did the switch happen where horses went from being owned primarily by men to primarily women?

So I was just watching special features for Lord of the Rings and the director was talking about a big battle scene where they had to hire local horse owners in New Zealand to film in the scene. But because more than 90% of those people were women, they had to dress them up like men.

This got me thinking. All around the world a vast majority of people who own horses or just love horses in general are women. Why is that? There is nothing inherently "girly" about horses so why don't we see more male owners (aside from jockeys)? Before the 20th century horses were used a lot for work by men. Did men lose interest once technology replaced them?

Let's have a discussion about this! I don't know much about horses so I'd like to hear everything you have to say, even if it's common knowledge.
