What are your favorite headcanons that were ultimately disproven by the show?
Title is pretty self-explanatory. What are some of your favorite headcanons you had that the show unfortunately ended up disproving at some point?
Here are a few of mine:
1. Magical glows are non-diegetic.
This is the idea that the colored glow we see around unicorn's horns when they use magic is something that only the viewers at home can see, not something that's actually visible in-universe.
This theory would have explained so many plot holes in previous episodes, such as why Applejack wasn't able to immediately see that Twilight was magically manipulating her cart during Winter Wrap Up (even though her glowing aura was clearly visible on the cart), why nopony noticed that Cadance's magical aura color had apparently changed to green in A Canterlot Wedding, why Pinkie Pie wasn't able to immediately work out that magic was involved in closing the curtains on the train during Mmmystery on the Friendship Express, or why nobody commented on Rarity's sudden change of magical aura color during Inspiration Manifestation.
Alas, Rarity just had to go and ruin this theory by remarking about the luminescence of unicorn magic near the beginning of Dragon Quest, leaving this theory dead in the water and the aforementioned plot holes unexplained.
2. Equestria's planet is flat
In a world where the sun and moon have to be raised and lowered magically, the idea of a round planet makes much less sense than it does in our world. For example, what are the creatures on the other side of the planet seeing when Celestia raises the sun? Do they believe it just moves around randomly on its own? And if the sun and moon are really as big as they are in our world, how are Celestia and Luna able to move them? If the two sisters really are that strong, it seems like they should be much more powerful than they seem to be at other points in the show. Picking up a mountain and throwing it at an enemy should be child's play for them, but we've never seen them do anything nearly that powerful in a combat setting. Furthermore, the sun and moon seem to change positions much more quickly than the speed of light should allow given how far they are away they are. After Celestia "raises the sun", there should be an approximately 8 minute delay before anyone on Equestria sees any visible difference in the direction the light from the sun is coming from (16 if you assume magic is also limited by the speed of light), but instead the difference is noticeable almost immediately.
These inconsistencies are easily explained if you use a model of the planet and solar system that's substantially different from the one present in our own world. In particular, if Equestria were flat and the sun and moon were magical entities rather than celestial bodies governed by the normal laws of physics, these problems would be a non-issue. Additionally, given that the idea of a flat earth is a pretty popular idea in fantasy settings, it's a pretty natural fit for Equestria.
Unfortunately, the existence of a globe in Twilight's library and Pinkie's remark about the world being round in Hearth's Warming Eve mean this theory doesn't really hold any water. It's pretty clear that Equestria's planet is round like ours.
