Happy Friday, people! To kick off the weekend, I figured I'd pose a question I've thought about this week.

You are probably familiar with Pokémon in some capacity. Well, it has a cartoon show, as you'd imagine. And the goal is for the protagonist to beat the Pokémon League and become a Pokémon Master.

At least to begin with.

You see, after 20 years worth of episodes, he hasn't managed to do that. He gets to the Pokémon League in whatever region the show is currently taking place, and loses at one point or another. Next region, his buddy Pikachu and himself act like all their knowledge and experience from the previous adventure didn't even happen. This has obviously made some of the older fans question what exactly the deal is with the show; It effectively retcons itself every few years. The answer from Nintendo is that the show is supposed to be relevant to the Pokémon scene (i.e. the main series games) while maintaining the feel of the first season; They want all children to be able to experience the protagonists adventures as similar to their own, as a fresh Pokémon Trainer learning how to raise and battle with Pokémon.

Some might say that's a cheap way to never have to give anyone actual character progression and effectively make every single episode a filler episode since you know by default it'll never advance the plot that actually isn't there, or a lazy way to avoid having to write a new story for the series.

But let's not get into that.

More importantly, what if MLP did this?

By which I mean, the writers have a finite amount of new lessons they can make into an episode. Whereas shows like Pokémon aren't tied down by much else than "There has to be 8 Gym leader battles and a Pokémon League somewhere in there", MLP:FIM seems to be mandated to contain some form of educational content, to some degree. And as educational as it might sound, I think making an episode about, say, how to buy rental property as a long-term investment, would just be stupid.

So assuming the writers do run out of ideas (literally), how would you want them to go about continuing the show? Make a 5th Generation and start over? Start with a new Mane 6 (i.e. Starlight, Maud, Trixie etc.) and have them experience the same lessons as we have already seen the current Mane 6 experience, but in different ways than before? Just straight up ignore previous seasons and have Fluttershy learn how to be assertive all over again?
