On International Women's Day, let's take a moment to honor the women that made this fandom possible.
From Bonnie Zacherle, without whom the entire My Little Pony franchise would not exist, to Laruen Faust, who re-imagined MLP into the incarnation we know it as today, Friendship is Magic and its fandom would not exist without the women who made it possible.
The show itself is a brilliant role model for young girls, who see that women can fulfill so many roles in society and that their sex should not be a deciding factor into whether or not they can do anything they set their mind to and be really good at it. It does this without highlighting or emphasizing the fact that most of the characters are girls. When you normalize women in all these roles, it quickly becomes apparent that they are doing what they're doing because they can and they want to. There's no point they're trying to prove. They can be a: National leader Farmer Fashionista Party planner Top athlete Animal caretaker And though there may be challenges along the road, the least of their problems when achieving their goals is that they're female.
Not only does the show have some wonderful women in it, there are also many that helped create it. Writers like Meghan McCarthy and Amy Keating Rogers, storyboard artists like Sabrina "Sibsy" Alberghetti, and of course voice actresses like Tara Strong, Ashleigh Ball, Andrea Libman, and Tabitha St. Germain. Without their work and contributions, I'm sure the show would not have experienced the success it did.
There's also the girls and women of the brony fandom, who shine in a male dominated crowd not because they're women, but because their work and enthusiasm resonate among fans regardless of sex or gender.
Now, most of the people reading this, by demographics of the fandom, are male. I do not mean to undercut, demean, or erase you in any way. Boys of all ages can learn a lot from the show and feel empowered by it just as much as girls can. There are wonderful male characters, writers, animators, and voice actors as well, and they too deserve recognition and applause. About 80% of the brony fandom is male. I emphasize again, though, that without the women, there would be no show or fandom to speak of. While we have this day (and every day) to give them the spotlight for all they've done and continue to do, I simply want to recognize them.
