#horses - #Serious question. Instead of spurs or whips, would punching your horse make it gallop faster?

Serious question. Instead of spurs or whips, would punching your horse make it gallop faster?

I'm doing some research for a villain in a short film I'm making and the thought of being the fastest horsemen in the west via punching his horse in the back of the head came up. As the bad guy, he steals horses and punches them to gain maximum speed, as they develop head injuries and stop responding over time, he just steals another horse. Keep in mind, the entire point of this characters behavior is to make the audience outraged.

But for the logical end of things, would punching a horse in the back of the head actually make it gain speed in a clutch moment just like ramming spurs into its sides or flogging it with a whip does?
