Question about horses with hair loss

Hi! I don't own horses myself, but I work part time at a farm and care for them and other livestock. The farm where I work has two horses and two ponies. One horse and one pony have each lost a chunk of their manes about 3-5 inches wide and have hair loss on the skin around that area. I brought it to the owners attention, and he has been putting some kind of cream on it but he doesn't know what has caused it and hasn't called a vet. I suggested it, but that's all I can do.

So does anyone know what could be causing this? Thanks in advance.
