[AU] Help Me Ship Nerdy Twilight

I'm working on an AU fanfic starring a twenty-something Mortal Celestia, who is best friends with Twilight Sparkle. I have most of the story ironed out, but I'm running into one problem: who to ship Twilight with.

In this universe, Twilight is about 18. She wears glasses and is somewhat socially awkward--picture someone like Moondancer, though less Cat Lady-ish. This fic takes place over the course of Season 2, meaning, Twilight is currently in Ponyville studying friendship with her friends.

In this universe, Twilight is next in line for the Lunar Throne--which means that she will, eventually, need to produce an heir. Hence, I need to find a stallion to pair her with. But I'm having a hard time thinking of someone to pair with nerdy, withdrawn Twilight!

Some Rejected Suggestions:

  • Big Mac: Too old (like, 8 years older)
  • Flash Sentry (Hasn't appeared yet, and I have him lined up with someone else)

Some Possibilities I've Been Considering:

  • One of the Apple cousins?
  • Soarin'? (After he accidentally offends, and is subsequently dumped by, Celestia, he might get his act together enough to catch her eye).
  • R63 Trixie? (I mean, while we're screwing with canon anyways...)

Any other ideas?

How were the non-pony members of the Student Six selected to attend Twilight's School?

The majority of students appear to be ponies, so Sandbar is probably just one of many.

However, the rest of the Student Six were all brought by their nation's leaders, presumably as some sort of diplomatic gesture.

How were they selected to be the representatives of their respective kingdoms? Were they the only ones who volunteered? Are they all related to the Queen/King/Dragon Lord/etc?

Theory: what if Starlight brought Maud into existence?

So, we know that Maud wasn't in Pinkie Pie's cutie mark story back in "Cutie Mark Chronicles". The first time we ever saw Maud was in a picture on Pinkie's wall in "Pinkie Pride," in a photo taken at Pinkie's first party. How did she suddenly appear there, when she wasn't in Pinkie Pie's backstory? Well, maybe this is where Starlight comes into the picture. If you recall the season 5 finale, Starlight made a time travel spell that brought Twilight into the past. Anything the two of them did drastically changed the future. I think that Starlight would have had to experiment a little in order to get the spell just right. What if during one of those tests, she ended up going back before the Pie sisters, or at least the ones after Limestone, were born? She could have only spent a few moments there before returning to the present, so any effect would be tiny, but it could still have had a small ripple effect that caused Igneous Rock and Cloudy Quartz to have 4 kids instead of just the 3 that there were before. We could be watching a timeline that is only very slightly different than the one we started in. We just didn't know that there could be altered timelines before we met Starlight.
