Pinkie is a Crystal Pony

This is why her coat changes color when she's depressed.

Perhaps she's part crystal, on her mom's side.

#horses - #Mystery Lameness, continued.

Mystery Lameness, continued.

So 2 weeks ago now my mare came up slightly lame. I waited a week put her on stall rest and it didn't resolve itself.

So then I had the vet out. Vet thought it was a possible abscess so I treated for an abscess (still on stall rest) soaking and the vet gave me some bute.

Since we thought abscess I went ahead and talked to the farrier about putting shoes with pads on her. (He was out anyways) He said he wanted to look before we settled on shoeing her again, fine. He looked and found no signs of abscess and said the tenderness the vet found was just due to the weird weather changes we've been getting and all the horses hooves have been a bit soft. Gives her a trim and off we go! (Note: after a couple days of stall rest while treating for abscess she seems to be getting better.) I go to do some light lunging to see if she's off and she immediately takes off bucking and bolting. Great!

Leave her on stall rest for a couple more days and notice only intermittent lameness after I do some inhand walking/trotting on hard ground. On the road to success!!

Her paddock has dried and firmed up and I'm not worried about her slipping and doing something else. Out she goes (her run is maybe 20'x40' maybe 50??)

Well.

Life got in the way and I didn't get out to see her the last couple days and when I went to get her she walked off lame. Groomed her a bit and walked her a few yards to reaccess her lameness but the more we walked in the arena the less lame she appeared... she looked almost completely sound walking out of the arena.

I went to put her back. To get to her run you have to walk on a hard surface and then down a slight slope. Coming out of the arena she was taking very short strides, by the end of the barn aisle she was nearly sound again. Going down the hill she stumbled twice.

I'm so lost right now. I'm new to the area and I've gotten several rec's for this vet. But the farrier has been amazing, has been working for 20+ years, has many awards etc. Do I get the vet back out here? Put her back on Bute? Stall rest?

My Little Pony on Reddit- Meta Discussions Keep Falling on My Head

Hi there! It's Thursday again and that means another chance to talk about what's been happening around here and how you feel about it!

Same as every other time, feel free to discuss whatever it is you'd like regarding our little subreddit good or bad. If you're unhappy we'll try our best to fix whatever problem you're having!

If you want to talk about the MLP fandom in general, that's fine too!

But some people may not want to talk about comics or anything else that hasn't happened yet, so you should be nice and hide those conversations from those people by using the spoiler tag.

If you don't know how it's as easy as making an emote:

[It has ponies!](/spoiler)

Becomes: It has ponies!

And if you're not wanting to discuss the subreddit or community specifically you can also check out the weekly off-topic thread here!!!

Have a great day, everyone!!

What do you do if your horse threatens to bite or kick you?

I know there are tons of different philosophies from "hitting a horse at all is animal abuse and you shouldn't own a horse" to "punch it in the face if it bites you".

What's your rule? I don't have a horse currently, but I follow the rules at the first barn I rode at where I was for almost 10 years. Great owner, had lots of horses, almost everyone in the state that's into horses knows him and thinks he's an awesome person. First day of lessons I'm pretty sure it was, if a horse bites you, punch it in the nose, hard. The animal is 5-10 times your size, unless you're an MMA fighter and have warmed up for half an hour to fight the horse, you're not going to hurt it. That was the ONLY time it was OK to hit a horse ahead of the shoulder there, none of them were headshy.

If the horse kicked you or clearly attempted to, immediately walk over to its side and kick it with a flat foot in the abdomen. Flat foot because you could cause an injury if you jabbed it with a boot.

If I'm at another barn I do whatever the owner wants, but if I'm not allowed to even swat at a horse that's trying to hurt me, I'm probably not staying at the barn.

What about you?

Keep it civil, we're not going to get into any arguments about why your method is correct or someone else is wrong. We're all adults here. Civilized discussion/debate is perfectly fine/actually desirable

I have the best trainer ever!

So, my trainer has decided to give her students the very special opportunity of learning what it takes to train a horse from the ground up. Her personal philosophy is that a good riding school produces talented riders, and knowledgeable horse(wo)men. She announced yesterday that, come this April, she will be rescuing a horse, or pony, from auction rather than purchasing something. She wants to demonstrate that even "lost causes" have the potential to be great horses. Once trained, the rescue will be kept and used as a schoolie in her program, thus guaranteeing it a forever home. We (her students) are OVER THE MOON with excitement! I hope to document, and share this journey with you guys if any of you are interested. Take care, and happy riding!

#horses - #Am I Being Swindled?

Am I Being Swindled?

Hey, I've had many horses my entire life, but I've always had them on acreage (over 20 acres open pasture) in a herd setting, always fed alfalfa and only grained the occasional old horse, very hard keeper, or rescue. We didn't even feed in the summer because there was enough grass and it had a great mineral content.

Anyway, I board my gelding now and it's gone from self care/self purchasing of feed at my last barn to they feed/I buy feed at the current barn, and now they buy feed/ they feed it at the current barn. When I was buying the feed I bought 8 (40lb) bales good quality grass hay every 3 weeks, and 3 bags of good quality grain a month. My horse was in nice condition in that.

Now that the owners have started buying the feed and feeding it my feed bill has gone up significantly. I was paying $114 for my total feed bill. Now I'm paying $260. The hay quality is not as good and they feed round bales, which I think should be cheaper but my hay bill doubled. They say the 2 horses in the paddock go through 1 whole round bale a week. I've had a round bale once before years ago and it lasted my two horses 1 month. The grain I'm paying for 6 bags per month, which seems like too many too me.

My horse is an easy keeper, a little on the fat side but not obese, and he is basically not worked. I'm only able to ride maybe 1 or 2 times per month, and those are just easy 40 minute trail rides. I can't believe my horse is eating that much food.

I have a feeling that the other boarder in my paddock is not having to pay for hay (that I'm paying the total round bale cost for the paddock) or that they're saying to us both that the horses are going though more than they are. And that perhaps my grain is being used for other horses as well.

I have no proof other than the rising costs and the past that things don't seem to add up. The barn owner is very nice and I like her a lot, but I'm just a little bit confused. What do you think? Thanks!

Tldr: my feed cost is rising without reason. The barn owners are saying my horse is going through more feed than I think is possible, and I have no way of knowing. My feed bill went up $147 when they started buying the feed (basically same grain but round bales of lower quality grass hay instead of the small bales I was buying). I think they might be taking advantage of me. They are very nice but I'm worried. They say he eats per month:

Two full big round bales hay 6 bags high quality grain

He's a 13 years old, 16.2hh, very easy keeper, big boned, and a little overweight but not bad. Basically not ridden or worked. Almost a pasture pet.

Am I wrong in wondering why my feed bill went up so much once they started buying and feeding? Total I'm now paying the price of a full care barn with nicer facilities, and is chosen this place because it's less expensive, so just wondering. Thanks!

#mylittlepony - #The Cutie Re-Mark: How were the Bad Futures created?

The Cutie Re-Mark: How were the Bad Futures created?

I was inspired by Hclegend's post. Go read it: http://ift.tt/2kWPs6H

How do you think the Bad Futures were created? Zecora says that a tiniest actions in the past can have major ripples on the future, but what were those ripples?

Timeline 1: Starlight paralyzes Rainbow Dash during the race. The end result is the Great Crystal War between Equestria and the Crystal Empire.

Timeline 2: Twilight Sparkle annoys Rainbow Dash while Starlight convinces the bullies to befriend Fluttershy. This leads to Chrysalis taking over Equestria.

Timeline 3: Twilight and Starlight have a magic battle, and Rainbow Dash stops to watch them fight. This leads to Nightmare Moon taking over Equestria.

Timeline 4: Starlight smacks Rainbow Dash with her hoof, knocking her off course. This leads to Tirek destroying Equestria.

Timeline 5: Twilight accidentally freezes Rainbow Dash in a giant diamond. This leads to Discord taking over and turning Equestria into a madhouse.

Timeline 6: Starlight helps Fluttershy with her flight. This leads to Flim and Flam demolishing most of Ponyville.

Timeline 7: Starlight shoots a spell and knocks Rainbow Dash out of the race. This leads to Equestria somehow becoming a vast, lifeless wasteland.

How did their specific actions in the past lead to these different futures?

Get ready for more spoilers on Friday!

Hasbro is doing an event (Toy Fair) in New York on Friday and if it is going to be like previous years' Toy Fairs, they'll show off new My Little Pony merchandise and possibly Equestria Girls merchandise. A few years back, they also showed a soundless preview for Equestria Girls 3. So maybe we'll even be getting a preview for Equestria Girls/My Little Pony: The Movie.

#horses - #Help making a tail extension?

Help making a tail extension?

So I'm soon going to cut my boys tail so he can have it down rather than braided up in vet wrap to beat me in the head with. It's longer than I am tall (guestimate 6' from his butt to the end of the last strand, maybe longer now) and I was wondering how much to take off at once to make an extension out of it. I saw that extensions start at 36" and then go up from there, but I'm not sure on how much total I'd need, and how I would secure the end. Anyone else make an extension before?
