How would the cast react if "teaching friendship" had catastrophic consequences?

There's been a very interesting shift in the show over the years: Early on, lessons of friendship had to be learned by characters independently; Twilight even tells Rainbow to let Trixie go after their first encounter - hoping she'll learn to be better on her own! Later, however, the role shifted from learners to teachers, and the characters began instructing others on the tenets of friendship. It's a role the characters have become very comfortable in, with Twilight especially fully embracing her role of "Princess of Friendship".

But what if this had unintentional, catastrophic consequences - fallout none of them could foresee, but with an impact none of them could imagine?

Let's take a hypothetical situation: A year or two on, the Changelings begin to fall ill - bursting out in spontaneous laughter, shaking wildly, and suffering from mental disorders. It is discovered that sharing love among each other has a significant risk of producing a neurodegenerative, prion-like disease in the feeder. The effect is irreversible once begun, although it can be slowed with treatment; much of the Changedling population is found to be infected, including Thorax. Worse, the disease has one final stage - unable to feed conventionally, the Changedlings blindly attack whoever is nearest and attempt to feed by force.

How does the cast react? What would they try and do for the remaining Changedlings? Would Twilight sequester herself in a laboratory, trying to develop a cure no matter the hopelessness of it? Would Starlight fall back on some of her more exotic, dangerous magics? How could Spike, who is closest to Thorax, handle it? Do they seek out or capture Chrysalis to interrogate her as to a solution? What about the Changedlings themselves? Do they deliberately isolate themselves to protect ponies against the final stages of the disease? How do the un-infected choose what path to take?
