#mylittlepony - #When do you think Celestia and Luna would be willing to step down from rule?

When do you think Celestia and Luna would be willing to step down from rule?

So, hypothetically speaking. If someone who was a paragon of good, who was extremely competant in leadership and competant enough to rule Equestria offered to lead instead of the Two Sisters do you know if they would oblige and "retire"? At least retire in a more passive sense, like what the other Alicorn princesses do. Lets say this pony who offered to take over could control the Sun and Moon, was wise, strong, the people loved them, and so did the Sisters, do you think they would allow them to lead in their place of them? Do you think that Celestia and Luna are tired of ruling? How could one person keep such interest in ruling for millenias?

#mylittlepony - #General Fanfiction Discussion Thread

General Fanfiction Discussion Thread

Hi everyone!

This is the thread for discussing anything pertaining to Fanfiction in general. Like your ideas, thoughts, what you're reading, etc. This differs from my Fanfic Recommendation Link-Swap Thread, as that focuses primarily on recommendations. Every week these two threads will be posted at alternate times.

Although, if you like, you can talk about fics you don't necessarily recommend but found entertaining.

IMPORTANT NOTE. Thanks to /u/BookHorseBot (many thanks to their creator, /u/BitzLeon), you can now use the aforementioned bot to easily post the name, description, views, rating, tags, and a bunch of other information about a fic hosted on Fimfiction.net. All you need to do is include "{NAME OF STORY}" in your comment (without quotes), and the bot will look up the story and respond to your comment with the info. It makes sharing stories really convenient. You can even lookup multiple stories at once.

Have fun!

#mylittlepony - #The Fanfic Recommendation Link-Swap Thread

The Fanfic Recommendation Link-Swap Thread

So, because it's No-Pics Thursday (April 4th, 2019) today, you know what that means...

It's time for the Weekly Fanfic Recommendation LINK-SWAP Game thread to continue!

Anyways, THE RULES (read 'em carefully):

  • Post a link to a fanfiction you like (can be your own as well - it's okay to self-promote), with or without a short blurb.

  • Important: Reply to someone else's post with a link to a fanfiction you think they might like, based on their choices.

  • Put each of your choices in a separate post if you want to make sure to get a recommendation based on each one. You may reply to someone else's reply, either to you or to someone else. Please make long discussion threads, they introduce a healthy bit of exploration and can help us find new interests! And that's it!

PLEASE COMPLETE BOTH STEPS 1 and 2. Don't just show up and ask for recommendations if you're not willing to provide any. I'll start the first few threads myself, and reply with a gentle reminder if you forget.

Ready? Set? LET"S GO! Also, feel free to self-promote in here!

#mylittlepony - #Character analysis/discussion: Limestone Pie

Character analysis/discussion: Limestone Pie

In case you missed me posting nothing but Limestone related pictures for the last two days, I've had her on my mind quite a lot lately. It's no secret that I like grumpy characters. There is something about them that I always relate to and it's just fun to think about what is going on inside their heads.

So let's dive into the mind of Limestone Pie and find the things that make up her inside world.

Starting with...

Stress

I think the source of Limestone's perpetual anger is stress. She is supposedly the one who runs the farm, which brings its own responsibilities. She also has to take care of her elderly parents. Or at least, I assume they're elderly, because why else wouldn't they be running the farm. At the very least, they do expect Limestone to do it instead of them. So there is the responsibility to the family as well. And considering how protective she is of Holder's Boulder, she is also concerned about that.

And on top of that, she's gotta take care of Marble as well. I mean, that girl seems to be practically mute; she's very vulnerable and needs a lot of care and support. Now whether or not Limestone is good at that is debatable, I like to think that she's the kind of jerk who will push you down when you're on the top, but will be the first one to offer a shoulder to cry on when you're on the bottom. And Marble must be on the bottom a lot, especially with how badly Big Mac hurt her.

So there's the constant stress of responsibility on her back. But there is one other thing that might be bothering her: Longing.

I don't imagine life on a rock farm being terribly good. I mean, it's not the worst thing, the Pie family does seem to be passionate about it. But it's probably not the same sort of passion the Apple family has for apple farming. More like, a thing they do for a living. A job that runs in the family, whether they like it or not. And considering how Pinkie talked about her life there, before she got her cutie-mark and the fact that even Maud is moving away from that, it's probably not their desired path in life. And Limestone is probably not an exception either.

Consider this: Pinkie Pie moves away and becomes central in the life of a small town, and becomes everypony's friend, constantly brightening their days. Maud moves and away and BAM boyfriend! Even Marble, she didn't even have to say a word and she still turned the head of a very pulchritudinous stallion. It's possible that she wouldn't even have to try to get into a relationship. It's another thing, that she failed to capitalize on the situation... But really, that's just more emotional baggage on Limestone, because she's the one who's got to comfort her.

It's like, everypony around her is taunting her with their success in leaving the farm (or at least, their potential). And she's stuck there on the rock farm. Possibly doomed to be lonely, with her rock farm related responsibilities.

Of course she's grumpy, she's got a lot on her mind.

It's a difficult place to be in. I mean, somepony does have to run the farm. And it's not like her parents are going to take care of themselves. And Marble needs a bit of pushing as well, to get her through her emotional vulnerability, which isn't an easy thing to do. Especially when you grew up in such a cold and stoic environment. So there is no easy solution.

Maybe she should just take a brake once in a while and have a few "me days". Maybe that would help her get herself together. But who's going to run the farm while she's away?

Her relationship with Marble

I like to think, that just like the way Pinkie and Maud seem to be each-other's favourite sisters, Marble and Limestone might have a similar relationship. Marble is timid and vulnerable, so she does need a strong figure who is willing to carry her. (This is why Pinkie talks Rainbow Dash out of pranking Fluttershy, she's got experience with emotionally fragile ponies.)

Perhaps they share some of the same grievances, maybe Limestone is just a big softy on the inside, maybe it's just the strength that Marble needs to keep standing.

On the flipside, this might actually be somewhat harmful on Marble's end. She might grow too camplacent with her helplessness, leading to a pony who makes Fluttershy seem like charismatic superstar. And Limestone might just not be the best pony for her in this case. Limestone sympathizes with pain, but she doesn't have any meaningful to add when it comes to getting over it. Not Pinkie or Maud either, because they are pretty confident on their own as well, even if they lack Limestone's sheer personal power.

I'm sure Limestone tries pushing Marble out of her comfort zone from time to time. She probably often tells her that she needs to speak up, if she wants to get ahead in life. She probably pushed her to talk to Big Mac as well. And after Marble's heartbreak, Limestone probably told her the she failed because she just didn't open her mouth.

This is probably a hurdle on their relationship, because Limestone just simply doesn't understand how being sensitive works. She understands pain, but she doesn't understand fear. What Marble needs, is some very soft encouraging words, not Limestone's raspy nagging, even if she is the best hugger in the world. (Just like how Pinkie wasn't the best at finding a friend for Maud either.)

Other than that, Limestone provides a stable standing ground for Marble, through her sheer strength of character. And Limestone herself must feel very protective towards her and would rather die than see her cry. But she also sees Marble having a lot of difficulties down the line, due to Marble's extremely timid nature. She just doesn't know how to deal with it. Though, she does try.

This really just gives Limestone more things to stress about.

Conclusion, TL:DR

Whew, I talked a lot already. What can I do, a lot of things can go through one's head working in a factory. I didn't even mention how I shipped her with Lyra.

Anyway, what else do you have to add? What do you think of Limestone as a character?

Edit: Added bolding and emotes.

Pony stuff you want to talk about but isn't worthy of a dedicated thread! #48

There are always things about the show I want to talk about, but I'd rather not always dedicate an entire full blown thread to it or it's never the right time to mention because no one would care. Maybe it's a thought that could be answered quickly enough to end discussion or something insignificant and stupid brewing in the back of your head for awhile! Anything you want to throw out to r/mylittlepony and say your piece!

Is there anything you've wanted to mention lately but never got around to it? Anything you want to speak up about for a bit? Any pony topic at all?

#mylittlepony - #Vulnerability is good: Or, why protagonists should be wrong.

Vulnerability is good: Or, why protagonists should be wrong.

...or, "is moral ambiguity good?"

Recently a thread was written on how the show's writing staff has changed the show. In the comments, a very different point was brought up: The question of vulnerability of characters. In this thread, I hope to take a deeper dive into what that means and why it was so critical to the show's success.

On vulnerable characters.

This aspect in particular struck me, because when you get down to it many of the Element-Bearers were profoundly vulnerable characters in the early seasons. Sometimes it's psychological: Our central protagonist is Twilight Sparkle, a neurotic pony who can sometimes barely function outside the realm of books and schedules. Applejack clearly feels the pressure of being the fulcrum on which the Apple Family weighs. Despite bearing Generosity, Rarity display a striking self-centeredness and manipulativeness. But sometimes, it's even more than: Applejack is fearful because the Acres always seem to be little more than one bad harvest away from financial ruin. Rarity does, in fact, get her dreams kicked in repeatedly. Rainbow Dash does, in fact, lose a long-time friend.

I would argue this is one of the core values which made the characters interesting to us. They are convincingly vulnerable, and so the are sympathetic. We understand their goals, and so rationally understand what they fear losing. Disappointing a mentor or teacher? Not being able to support family? Being rejected by friends? Who hasn't feared these things? And so in turn we emotionally connect the characters. I wrote before on how the fandom is intrinsically linked to the concept of self-expression; yet, this is so because we recognized the cast as being complete characters - including flaws and vulnerabilities.

Let your heroes fail.

At some point, this began to change. A terrible conversion came over the show: The primary cast became invulnerable.

I'm not going to argue why this is. There are fair points to be made that it represents the views of current staff operators, that it's a symptom of the show being purely episodic and having the characters overcome their greatest flaws early on, or that it's just a consequence of writer turnover without a central, guiding figure. All could be true; I'm not interested in playing the blame game.

Whatever the cause, what began to occur is that the characters acted with relative fearlessness. In doing so, they ceased to struggle. We no longer saw them walk into a situation with anything less than total confidence that they would succeed. Now, to be totally clear: I'm not talking about whether they appeared confident or not. I'm talking about cast confidence. We began to see them walk into situations with the utter confidence that they would succeed. I think, in essence, that's what the oft-repeated criticism of "X learned this lesson already" really gets at: "Because this character has already experienced this situation, I as a viewer cannot believe they are vulnerable enough to lead to real consequences."

Eventually, however, it extended even beyond repeat-situations. Any tangentially or superficially similar situation could be approached with that same expectation, until it encompassed virtually any situation where the M6 encountered anything outside their main group. There was no longer any sense of vulnerability about them. They would be proven right, over and over.

Which is problematic, because the ability to not succeed is a critical part of character writing: They must have goals, obstacles, and flaws - and from those flaws, a failure mode. Giving your characters a failure mode is absolutely necessary. This, I think, is also why the Student 6 have fundamentally failed to catch my attention: What characterization we have seen from them has yet to reveal a goal, obstacle, or flaw - and, critically, a failure mode - for any of them.

Is moral ambiguity good?

First, to be clear, when I speak of "moral ambiguity" I am speaking very specifically of presenting situations where no one character is not necessarily 100% in the wrong, or another 100% in the right. They may be right in some ways and wrong in others.

Given that this is a show where the villains are not going to succeed wildly Game of Thrones-style, it is my sense then that this ambiguity becomes somewhat critical to the creation of good narratives. Your question isn't "will the good guys succeed" (of course they will; it's a cartoon that needs to bring in a younger audience) but how will they succeed. What will they learn in the process?

Unfortunately, the above-mentioned invulnerability of character carries with it complete and total lack of moral uncertainty. Our protagonists become unquestioned paragons, and anyone outside their group inherently clearly in the wrong. They will never learn anything from an outsider, because that would imply they are wrong about something in the first place. What we're left with, then, is characters who were just right all along - unchallenged by what they face. And personally, I find that profoundly boring.

The few moments they do end up acting "in the wrong", it often comes off as the characters behaving bizarrely - specifically because their vulnerability to those situations has already been approached.

What do you think? Is there sense in this final point? In any of what I say here? Or is this all "barking up the wrong tree"?

Getting Hyped!

This is actually the most excited I have been for a FiM season premiere since before season 5!

I don't know what it is about endings that gets me so pumped. I love a good beginning but not as much as a well executed (or even over the top) ending.

I know the mood in the fandom right now is mostly one of meloncholy but I just can't wait for Saturday! New ponies! New adventures! And with it being the last season I'm eager to see how they mix things up. You have to expect that they'll want to pull out all the stops and do things with the story that they've been wanting to do forever but had to keep kicking down the road for the sake of saving it until the end.

Are you as hype as I am? Do you wish you could just skip over Friday so we could get to Saturday morning already? ARE YOU READY FOR THE BEGINNING OF THE END!!?

#mylittlepony - #My Little Pony on Reddit - Super Secret* Meta Discussion. *Not Actually Secret

My Little Pony on Reddit - Super Secret* Meta Discussion. *Not Actually Secret

Hi there! It's Thursday again and that means another chance to talk about what's been happening around here and how you feel about it!

Same as every other time, feel free to discuss whatever it is you'd like regarding our little subreddit good or bad. If you're unhappy we'll try our best to fix whatever problem you're having!

If you want to talk about the MLP fandom in general, that's fine too!

But some people may not want to talk about comics or anything else that hasn't happened yet, so you should be nice and hide those conversations from those people by using the spoiler tag.

If you don't know how it's as easy as making an emote:

>!It has ponies!!<

Becomes: It has ponies!

And if you're not wanting to discuss the subreddit or community specifically you can also check out the weekly off-topic thread that will be up at noon Pacific time!!!!

Have a great day, everyone!!
