#mylittlepony - #Musings on a Friendship is Magic Theme Park Experience

Musings on a Friendship is Magic Theme Park Experience

Obviously, it's probably too late for this to happen, but the concept of a Harry Potter or Star Wars-esque My Little Pony area at a park like Disney or Universal is too tempting for me not to think about; After all, Faust designed the Friendship is Magic universe to be as fleshed out and complex as the fantasy worlds we so often see in amusement parks, so the series is a ridiculously natural fit. So, I figured I would quickly drop a concept here to at least get it out.

Critical elements of the park design

  • All the architecture and theming must be a natural fit with the design style of Friendship is Magic. Harry Potter succeeded because it felt hyper-authentic to the books and movies. Pandora succeeded because it built a detailed, consistent natural world. In both of these cases, the design of structures across the park were pivotal to these ends. You feel like you're walking down the streets of Hogsmeade and exploring an intriguing alien landscape because, for all intents and purposes, you are. Guests should feel like they've stepped into a magical fantasy world run by Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamhorse here, and to do that, all the details of the area should be consistent with each other and with the show.
  • The area should appeal to all demographics. This is a strength of the show, of course, but it's also a clear trend we've seen in the other immersive areas to pop up; Potter's opening day attractions were a fairly intense dark ride, a children's roller coaster, and an extreme roller coaster, for example.
  • The area should play to its source material's strengths and put the characters in the spotlight. Ideally, guests should have ample opportunities to interact with and get to know at least the Mane 6, to understand and enjoy their personalities and motivations. This is one area where I feel other immersive theme park worlds have struggled, but the sheer diversity of characters and personalities in My Little Pony puts it in a better position to succeed than those areas, and the ponies are friendly enough to keep the guests happy and involved without sacrificing immersion.
  • The experiences in the area should be slightly different during every visit and feel like that of a living, breathing town. Perhaps have different background ponies make cameos greeting guests from day-to-day and unique pony concerts/slice of life "events" once or twice a week. Plus, holidays. Could you imagine being able to enjoy a real-life Winter Wrap-Up, Summer Sun Celebration, Running of the Leaves, Nightmare Night, or Hearth's Warming Eve? Throw in exclusive apple cider during the fall months!
  • This is the one thing Hasbro would absolutely never agree to, but merchandise cannot include the toys sold in stores. A key ingredient in the Harry Potter/Pandora/Star Wars formula is to keep immersion (and thus guest excitement) high even in stores by selling products that fit into the world around it naturally. Selling products with the My Little Pony logo on them and a picture of girls playing with the toys on the back probably isn't the best way to go about that. That said, there's plenty of other unique products you could sell in stores instead; Magical artifacts, Ogres & Oubliettes game kits, the Friendship Journal, Daring Do merch, clothing ostensibly designed by Rarity, maybe even repackage some of the standard toys as "commemorative statues" of some sort.

The Rides

  • Bookends - a KUKA robotic arm dark ride starring Twilight Sparkle and her attempts to defeat some sort of ultimate foe (Daybreaker come to reality?). The queue line is set in Twilight's castle and features a relatively beefy preshow, while the ride itself is similar in technical and artistic design to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, but with a heavier emphasis on physical props and animatronics, playing out on some level like a drastically upgraded Peter Pan's Flight.
  • Sonic Rainboom - An Intamin Blitz launched roller coaster patterned after Maverick), including the surprise second launch and heavy emphasis on speed and high pace, but with a 120-ft drop, slightly improved pacing, a top speed of 75 mph, and maybe more inversions. There's also a pseudo-dark ride section with a Rainbow Dash animatronic before the second launch, plenty of props and theming even within the ride, a queue with a somewhat involved story, plus unique special effects based on the namesake maneuver.
  • Unnamed Applejack Ride - a trackless dark ride set in Sweet Apple Acres allowing for infinite movement patterns. Riders are seated in barrels sent out of control as part of a Discord prank, and the ride is consequently a lot more lighthearted and chaotic than the more "orchestrated" nature of Bookends.
  • Trixie and Starlight's Runaway Rocket - A relatively small family coaster with a straightforward "Trixie's pyrotechnics display has gone horribly wrong" plot. Honestly somewhat of a filler ride, but it's designed as a bit of a stepping stone for children not ready for Sonic Rainboom.
  • Fluttershy's Petting Zoo - On its own a straightforward petting zoo for children, the setting behind Fluttershy's literal treehouse - featuring a loving recreation of her animal sanctuary - would make for an immersive and beautiful experience even with such a simple attraction.

    The Shops and Restaurants

  • Sugarcube Corner - The bakery we've seen countless times in Friendship is Magic. Guests will enjoy the same oddball and conventional pastries, sit in the same (albeit larger) dining room, and if they make a reservation, talk to the same host ponies via a screen a la Turtle Talk with Crush. A DJ Pon3 animatronic will get the chance to play a concert on Fridays and Saturdays.

  • Carousel Boutique - Rarity's famous store is an attraction in its own right. A preshow will allow guests to interact with the Element of Generosity's bearer and allow Rarity to give a sales pitch before guests enter the main shop. Once in the store, guests will be able to buy all sorts of unique apparel based on what characters from the show would wear as well as the personal tastes of our resident fashion designer.

  • Tea with Discord - Discord is in Fluttershy's house and, much to her dismay, is selling the guests tea instead of just sharing. Designed as a significantly quieter and calmer place than the rest of the land.

  • There will be room for other shopping and dining experiences, of course, with market stands as well as sitdown areas and shops similar to those seen in the heart of Ponyville in Friendship is Magic.

Final Thoughts

Will this happen? No. Is it fun to dream? Yes. Could a My Little Pony themed area be truly compelling? Maybe, but everything would have to be done with the true love and care that was put into creating the world of the source material. Have I written for 30 minutes longer than I planned? Absolutely.

#mylittlepony - #The Fanfic Recommendation Link-Swap Thread

The Fanfic Recommendation Link-Swap Thread

So, because it's No-Pics Thursday (March 14th, 2019) today, you know what that means...

It's time for the Weekly Fanfic Recommendation LINK-SWAP Game thread to continue!

Anyways, THE RULES (read 'em carefully):

  • Post a link to a fanfiction you like (can be your own as well - it's okay to self-promote), with or without a short blurb.

  • Important: Reply to someone else's post with a link to a fanfiction you think they might like, based on their choices.

  • Put each of your choices in a separate post if you want to make sure to get a recommendation based on each one. You may reply to someone else's reply, either to you or to someone else. Please make long discussion threads, they introduce a healthy bit of exploration and can help us find new interests! And that's it!

PLEASE COMPLETE BOTH STEPS 1 and 2. Don't just show up and ask for recommendations if you're not willing to provide any. I'll start the first few threads myself, and reply with a gentle reminder if you forget.

IMPORTANT NOTE. Thanks to /u/BookHorseBot (many thanks to their creator, /u/BitzLeon), you can now use the aforementioned bot to easily post the name, description, views, rating, tags, and a bunch of other information about a fic hosted on Fimfiction.net. All you need to do is include "{NAME OF STORY}" in your comment (without quotes), and the bot will look up the story and respond to your comment with the info. It makes sharing stories really convenient. You can even lookup multiple stories at once.

Ready? Set? LET"S GO! Also, feel free to self-promote in here!

This Week on the Plounge (Ponk Edition)

Hello and again welcome to your weekly dose of '安息': 'This Week on the Plounge' wherein I inform you, the fine folks of the mane sub, what's been going on at your favourite sister subreddit, the Plounge, this past week.

Wait, what is this Plounge you speak of?

The Plounge, or more formally the MLP Lounge is /r/mylittlepony's sister subreddit. Designed to be a place where you can free of the tyranny of rules 3 and 4. A chill place for bronies or anyone to talk in a SFW chat centric environment. It can be found over at /r/MLPLounge. (most of us browse by /new though). Oh and BPM is nice to have. Even if you're allergic to using emotes yourself you'll miss a lot of extra context without it.

What some casual conversation with a sprinkling of ponies? Come over to this introductions thread and meet some people. Don't worry there's also a topic so it ain't just "hi!" "hi" awkward silence.

  • The longest dark could be this one: daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa[...]aaaaaaaaaark

Every major MLP character learns about humanity. How do they each react?

From their history, their culture, their technology and so forth. Here are the characters listed:

  • The Mane Six
  • The Princesses
  • Family members, relatives, and other supporting characters

My guess is that the ponies learn about humans due to members of the latter travelling to Equestria using some interdimensional wormhole technology. This question does NOT apply to Equestria Girls. Though this does apply to other fictional universes where humans are the main focus like Marvel.

General Fanfiction Discussion Thread

Hi everyone!

This is the thread for discussing anything pertaining to Fanfiction in general. Like your ideas, thoughts, what you're reading, etc. This differs from my Fanfic Recommendation Link-Swap Thread, as that focuses primarily on recommendations. Every week these two threads will be posted at alternate times.

Although, if you like, you can talk about fics you don't necessarily recommend but found entertaining.

My Little Pony on Reddit - March Meta Discussion Madness- MADNESS!!!

Hi there! It's Thursday again and that means another chance to talk about what's been happening around here and how you feel about it!

Same as every other time, feel free to discuss whatever it is you'd like regarding our little subreddit good or bad. If you're unhappy we'll try our best to fix whatever problem you're having!

If you want to talk about the MLP fandom in general, that's fine too!

But some people may not want to talk about comics or anything else that hasn't happened yet, so you should be nice and hide those conversations from those people by using the spoiler tag.

If you don't know how it's as easy as making an emote:

>!It has ponies!!<

Becomes: It has ponies!

And if you're not wanting to discuss the subreddit or community specifically you can also check out the weekly off-topic thread here!!!!!

Have a great day, everyone!!

Pony stuff you want to talk about but isn't worthy of a dedicated thread! #45

There are always things about the show I want to talk about, but I'd rather not always dedicate an entire full blown thread to it or it's never the right time to mention because no one would care. Maybe it's a thought that could be answered quickly enough to end discussion or something insignificant and stupid brewing in the back of your head for awhile! Anything you want to throw out to r/mylittlepony and say your piece!

Is there anything you've wanted to mention lately but never got around to it? Anything you want to speak up about for a bit? Any pony topic at all?

#mylittlepony - #7 year old niece: "The're killing off princess Celestia and Luna!!!" (short story)

7 year old niece: "The're killing off princess Celestia and Luna!!!" (short story)

Wait what!? Who told you that? (I was fearing the worst, that perhaps she found one of those weird Chinese videos on youtube.) "There was a video about the new episodes on the computer." ........ So apparently after much back and forth and some talking with brother, I was able to figure out what happened.

One of her old teachers was retiring and she was confused why everyone was sad and why her teacher was "going away".

This lead to them explaining how the teacher is not going "away" forever and is actually ok, just that she isn't going to be working there anymore since she had been there for so long. Ok so what does this have to do with "killing off" Apparently sometime later, bro and his wife were talking about Games of Thrones and about characters getting "killed off". At which my little niece askes:

"What's that mean"

So to help explain, brother used analogy that when a show retires characters the people who play the character aren't hurt, that just like her old teacher, they are just not going to be on the show anymore. So niece put the two together and figured, since MLP is a show and that Celestia and Luna are retiring, that the correct term is "killing off".

#mylittlepony - #A Curiosity on Population Centers: Everycreature

A Curiosity on Population Centers: Everycreature

So something that I have noticed over the seasons is that there are a GREAT deal of Pony cities and other territories spread out all over Equestria that tend to be brimming with ponies and other creatures. However looking forward and back. . . it seems like most every other creature in Equestria only seem to have a single major city or gathering ground.

The Yaks have Yakyakistan.

The Griffons have the dilapidated Griffonstone.

The Hippogriffs have Seaquestria, divided into an Above and Underground states.

The Changedlings only seem to have their singular Changedling Hive, big though it may be.

The Dragons are still mostly solitary with only a few major non permanent gathering grounds on rare occasions.

And yet the Ponies as stated before have dozens if not hundreds of cities all pecked across Equestria. Why do y'all think that is? Did most of the Griffons just end up leaving Griffonstone and settled in Equestrian cities? Do Ponies just breed a lot more? Why is it that the Ponies alone are so spread out in several major population centers?

What were left out characters doing during certain episodes?

So there are a lot of episodes in this show and over the years it has gotten a VERY large cast. So large in fact that it necessitates leaving out characters in order to keep the story and episodes moving at a solid pace within their 22 minute time span.

And during "Fame and Misfortunes", when Starlight was "dealing" with a couple of ponies who made Rarity cry, I began to wonder. . . just where the heck is Spike during all this? I ultimately guessed that he had just been reading Power Pony comics all day and was so engrossed that he missed everything.

There are a LOT of episodes you can think on this subject about. So what are your headcanons for what a character was doing in a certain episode that they were left out of?
