My pasture board horse is being stalled suddenly for about a month. How can I help him adjust to this? So. Here's the thing. I bought my first horse in April of last year. He (7 yr apply gelding) came from a family that had him since he was 8 months old. The sale was reluctant on their end, only having been done because of serious back injury. They stated they would have kept him forever if not for a medical inability to them to ride. We remain in contact.
My horse T is at now pasture board. 65 acres divided into three sections/herds. A departure from the small dry lot with occasional pasture turnout with his one other gelding buddy that he used to know.
When he arrived, I worried he would founder or something with this change in living styles and all the grass. But he adjusted. Too well.
Within weeks of being there my gelding was busted mounting one of the mares. (Incidentally, the vet's champion horse they have been trying to impregnate via ivf...) This situation was deemed unacceptable by my awesome barn manager. We immediately scheduled a bloodwork test to make sure he wasn't proud cut or a freak with an extra gonad. Which he isn't. He's just a horn ball surrounded by hussy mares.
The herd which used to run as one large one has been divided into groups to accommodate my crazy frat boy gelding. In late fall (after heat cycles), the herds were combined to make winter management a little easier. T had zero issues until this weekend. When he was following the advances of a mare going into heat. To keep the rest of the herd safe from his not exactly unwanted (by the mares anyhow) advances, he needs to be separated.
The issue is that the field that would normally be his is devoid of grass at this time and still deemed unsafe because of slippery conditions. My barn manager has decided to stall him for the next month or so until his field can dry and grow grass. He's not accustomed to stall board. His former owners had him outside, I have him outside.. I know from the proud cut blood test that he loathes the stall.
What can I do for him to make this easier? This is going to be a rough month.
