#mylittlepony - #This Week on the Plounge (Derp Edition)

This Week on the Plounge (Derp Edition)

Hello and again welcome to your weekly dose of 'I really should post over there once of these days': 'This Week on the Plounge' wherein I inform you, the fine folks of the mane sub, what's been going on at your favourite sister subreddit, the Plounge, this past week.

Wait, what is this Plounge you speak of?

The Plounge, or more formally the MLP Lounge is /r/mylittlepony's sister subreddit. Designed to be a place where you can free of the tyranny of rules 3 and 4. A chill place for bronies or anyone to talk in a SFW chat centric environment. It can be found over at /r/MLPLounge. (most of us browse by /new though). Oh and BPM is considered essential for optimum Plounging. (we don't mind the occasional blank post over there)

Up some casual conversation with a sprinkling of ponies? Come over to this introductions thread and meet some people.

#mylittlepony - #The Fanfic Recommendation Link-Swap Thread (End of Pre-Season 7 Hiatus Edition)

The Fanfic Recommendation Link-Swap Thread (End of Pre-Season 7 Hiatus Edition)

So, because it's No-Pics Thursday (April 6th, 2017) today, you know what that means...

It's time for the Weekly Fanfic Recommendation LINK-SWAP Game thread to continue!

And we're in week 24 of the Season 6 to Season 7 hiatus. This is the final week! Only 2 more days until Season 7 is premiering on April 15!

Now, for this edition of the link-swap thread, let's try something a bit different. In addition to the rules below, I highly implore you all to post/rec your favorite stories that you read during the Season 6 to Season 7 hiatus.

Anyways, THE RULES (read 'em carefully):

  • Post a link to a fanfiction you like (can be your own as well - it's okay to self-promote), with or without a short blurb.

  • Important: Reply to someone else's post with a link to a fanfiction you think they might like, based on their choices.

  • Put each of your choices in a separate post if you want to make sure to get a recommendation based on each one. You may reply to someone else's reply, either to you or to someone else. Please make long discussion threads, they introduce a healthy bit of exploration and can help us find new interests! And that's it!

PLEASE COMPLETE BOTH STEPS 1 and 2. Don't just show up and ask for recommendations if you're not willing to provide any. I'll start the first few threads myself, and reply with a gentle reminder if you forget. Ready? Set? LET"S GO! Also, feel free to self-promote in here!

My Little Pony on Reddit - Google Meta Discussion generator has failed to load assets

Hi there! It's Thursday again and that means another chance to talk about what's been happening around here and how you feel about it!

Same as every other time, feel free to discuss whatever it is you'd like regarding our little subreddit good or bad. If you're unhappy we'll try our best to fix whatever problem you're having!

If you want to talk about the MLP fandom in general, that's fine too!

But some people may not want to talk about comics or anything else that hasn't happened yet, so you should be nice and hide those conversations from those people by using the spoiler tag.

If you don't know how it's as easy as making an emote:

[It has ponies!](/spoiler)

Becomes: It has ponies!

And if you're not wanting to discuss the subreddit or community specifically you can also check out the weekly off-topic thread here!!!!!

Have a great day, everyone!!!

#mylittlepony - #Hiatus in Hindsight

Hiatus in Hindsight

Sup. Since the Hiatus is coming to a close I thought I'd do a postmortem.

I've seen many complaints that content is in a lull and there's nothing to talk about during the hiatus so the main goal of my decrees was to give the subreddit a bit of a boost. I think I had mixed results here but in general I'd call it a success.

One of the things I was most paranoid about was taking over the subreddit. The goal was to add content, not to replace it or crowd it out. Some of the more popular weeks (like this last week) I feel might have crossed the line but in general I think we did great here.

The biggest challenge is walking the thin line between too narrow of a topic and too broad. Either end winds up in less people posting. There's lots of topic requests that I think would be interesting to see what people come up with but wouldn't have enough to them to last more than a day or two.

I tried to incorporate other pony communities or activities in my decrees, but this largely fell through. Originally I was talking with /r/mlpdrawingschool about combining weekly themes but decided after a bit that what made for good posting themes didn't necessarily make for good drawing themes. I also tried to work around Equestria Daily's pony celebration days but this was difficult because I often didn't know about them far in advance and often didn't have a good theme to go with them.

Week by Week

  • Costumes: Opening week here, right on Halloween! I picked a softball theme to start things off and picked Costumes, since a lot of people would already be posting those. The downside to this is that I had no idea if anyone was participating because of the decree or just posting normally.
  • Fluttershy: I was originally planning on doing a pony focused week every couple of weeks and started with Fluttershy. However once again I have no idea how much was posted as part of the decree vs how much was normal sub activity, but in general I didn't see much Flutters this week. I decided at this point that we needed both more visabilty and more specific themes for people to follow.
  • Snuggles: This was a week requested by Heir-of-Rick, and who can say no to him? In order to increase visibility I moved the Decree to NPT and encouraged people to add tags to their posts. I actually think the tags did far more than the Decree move, so maybe in the future I'll go back to Monday through Monday or something. This week was far more successful than the previous ones so I decided to use it as the template for future weeks.
  • Socks vs Sweaters: I think adding some silly arbitrary competition made this way more fun. I actually contacted the mods and got some custom flairs made for this week, but that kind of flopped. For one thing the flairs came late due to some miscommunication errors on my part, and they weren't really advertised outside the Decree. Also they didn't look all that different from standard cutie mark flairs so I think they mostly went unnoticed. I definitely want to do this week again (or something like it) next time, hopefully with more visibility and some more friendly trash talking.
  • Family: I wasn't wanting to entirely give up on Pony centric weeks, so I figured I'd work them in to other themes. This week Equestria Daily was also doing Applejack Day, and as well as being Thanksgiving I figured I'd roll Applejack in with one of her main themes: family! We had a lot more variety than just Applejack as well, and AJ actually kind of took the sidelines.
  • Combat: Easily one of the more popular weeks. A theme that a lot of people can recall specific favorites but not too restrictive, and a good change of pace from the normal sub posts.
  • Sleep: I wanted to do sleepover week but figured that was too narrow in scope, so I combined Sleeping and Sleepovers! Pretty standard week, nothing of note.
  • Royal Sisters: Timed on the Winter Solstice (for the Northern hemisphere) or the longest night of the year, I figured it would be the perfect week for Luna. But I was still wary of solo pony weeks so I threw in Celestia to boot. I figured that having it focus on two ponies would provide enough content for a week, but I was expecting primarily solo Luna or Celestia pics. To my surprise most of the pics were of BOTH the princesses together, even though that was a more restrictive theme. The takeaway from this is that more specific themes give people a better starting point for finding and posting things. It's a thin line to walk, not being too specific or too general.
  • Hearthswarming: So this week was notable because I was contacted by FlaminScribblenaut beforehand, asking if I could help promote their new sub /r/happyhearthswarming. This made me start thinking of not only providing content to the main sub but also the myriad of other pony subs that don't get nearly as much attention as they deserve. I started keeping what subs the themes could be crossposted to in mind, but I think I didn't do enough here. In the future I'll be sure to pimp other subs more.
  • Party: Hey look, Pinkie week conveniently bundled with New Years! Overall this was a pretty standard week, not much of note.
  • Filly: One of the weeks I had in my backlog for a long time. This is one that I remember thinking would be a huge success but only turned out OK. Not sure how I should have promoted it differently.
  • Non-Pony: I'd had a lot of requests for Griffon Week, Changeling Week, Dragon Week, etc, and I felt all of those were too narrow in scope individually. Rolled together though they made for a really good week. Equestria Daily also had Spike Day scheduled for this week so it felt like a good time for it.
  • Summer in January: I really wanted to do a Beach week but it just wouldn't fit into the appropriate time schedule (for Northern hemisphere) so I shoehorned it in this way. Wasn't nearly as big a success as I had hoped. Also the mods mentioned to me that this week was rather polarizing from the perspective of what content rating people expect from the sub - lots of people took exception to the swimsuit pics, and others made lots of lewd comments stating they wanted even more. Fun times for the mods I'm sure.
  • Gala: I think in the future if I do a similar week I'll change the name, as it was originally intended for all things formal attire and not just the Grand Galloping Gala. This went on this particular week because it was tangentially related to Equestria Daily's Rainbow Dash Day (dressing in style, etc) but it was kind of forced.
  • Stallion: I really wanted to do this near Valentines day so we could hype up the "beefcake" angle of the male pony population. This week kind of flopped though.
  • Alternative Ships: I'll be honest, I was expecting the sub to get flooded with shipping pics around this time and this was my way of passively aggressively fighting against that. There weren't that many sappy romance pics though so it was a false alarm. At this point the mods made me start sticking the "I'm not affiliated!" footer on my decrees because they started getting complaints about all the "troll" decrees "ruining" the sub. I decided to tone things down a little in response.
  • Future: A often requested week, Future week went over OK but not nearly as well as I was expecting with how hyped people were for it.
  • OCs: Original Characters get a real bad wrap sometimes. Well a lot of them deserve it honestly, but there's a lot of good ones out there that I don't feel should be dragged down with the rest. This week was to highlight some of the better ones as well as a good excuse to get back into promoting other subs.
  • Ponies Around the World: Another one of those weeks that was made by combining a bunch of requests together. It saw a lot of pretty fun posts and I'm pretty happy with it.
  • Adopt a Subreddit: 10/10, would decree again.
  • Crossover: I was expecting this to be a lot more kooky than it actually was. Probably a good thing. Another very popular week.
  • Madness: Putting the Hiatus in Hiatus. The Hiatus is normally known for all it crazy goofiness and I hadn't seen much of that, so I put in this week to compensate. I had actually offered to mods to do this on the week of April Fools, and then for the joke I would take over the sub and screw with the CSS. As they had other April Fools plans I did this earlier so as to not interfere with whatever they were doing.
  • Supporting Cast: I was originally going to do a Character a Day here like I did for the following week, but I couldn't decide on what characters. Spike? CMC? Starlight? Celestia and Luna? New characters from Season 6? Most had already had spotlight days already, and I was down one day to work with because I didn't want to conflict with whatever the sub was doing for April Fools. In the end I was too ambiguous and did "Supporting Cast", and this week flopped because of it.
  • Mane 6: Well now we have a new reigning champ for most popular week. Holy cow there were a lot of posts, probably too many. I like the character focus days but having 6 in a row is too many, I'll spread them out next time.

#mylittlepony - #How's everyone going to watch the premiere?

How's everyone going to watch the premiere?

So with the S7 premiere mere days away... how's everyone going to be enjoying their pony this weekend? Livestream together with a bunch of other fans? Watch it by yourself on live TV? Record it and watch it later?

I'm pretty torn myself. This is the first time since I've joined the fandom that I'm actually going to be watching episodes as they're first released, as opposed to just watching them after the fact on Netflix. Well, technically I think a few episodes might have been first airing when I was first getting into the show, but I wasn't to the point where I'd be worrying about S6 episodes at that point, I was still catching up with everything else. But yeah, this is basically new ground for me and I'm having a tough time deciding.

On one hoof, there's certainly something to be said about just sitting down and enjoying the episode with no distractions. Not reading a chat feed, not trying to be critical or make witty remarks, just sitting back and enjoying the experience. Full pony immersion. And in general that's usually how I'd approach something new, I want to save the critical aspects and discussion for later and just enjoy my first time free of all that.

On the other hoof, you only get one chance to join with your fellow fans and watch an episode as its first airing. Seems like a pretty unique experience, being together with others as you all see something for the very first time. And I'm DVR'ing the episodes, so its not like I can't just go back and watch them distraction-free later.

I just. Don't. KNOW. Maybe I need to split myself into 2 so I can do both at once, that usually turns out well, right?

So what about you all? What's your premiere experience looking like? And if you're doing the live stream method, which one are you going to be using? Is there a generally-accepted (by the fandom) "best" one? Is there one so big that you can't even keep up with reading everything, or does everyone stick to smaller groups?

#mylittlepony - #VS.

VS.

It's a time honored tradition, at least in comic books, for the heroes to have a falling out with one another. What starts as an arguement and some fraying nerves eventually spirals into a series of uncomfortable confrontations and betrayles, both real and imagined.

Probably the best example MLP has to offer of this trope comes in the episode Fall Weather Friends. Though the conflict between Rainbow Dash and Applejack never reaches the point of a straight up fight, it is all out war between the two as they try to determine who is the most athletically gifted.

While it is a sign of character growth that as time has gone on, these kinds of conflicts among the Mane 6 have become less and less likely. As they become closer friends, the kinds of misunderstandings that would lead to open conflict just... don't really happen. Even when they do, conflicts are typically resolved in a diplomatic way, like in the season 6 episode P.P.O.V.

But what if that weren't the case? What if there was some pigtail misunderstanding, some absolute falling out that pitted friends against one another? Hero vs. Hero. Friend against Friend.

What fight would you most be interested in seeing? Applejack vs Pinkie Pie? Rarity vs. Rainbow Dash? Or something unexpected like Starlight Glimmer vs Spike?

Their still friends and they still care about one another, but for some reason they must fight! What fight would you love to see?

#mylittlepony - #Fellowship Symphonies - a group of french MLP orchestral composers

Fellowship Symphonies - a group of french MLP orchestral composers

Hi fellow bronies and fellow redditors !

Some of you may have already heard of us, but my guess is that most of you haven't.

so, who are we ? We're Fellowship Symphonies, a group of composer that was birthed by the gathering of A symphony of two and myself (a.k.a. CainbowRrash) - we met for the first time in november, to prepare a collab of the Ponies at dawn album amity.

What do we do ? As stated in the title, we mostly do orchestral music, with a strong influence of movies score composers such as Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Howard Shore, and Joe Hisaishi (among other).

Here are some examples in different styles: Introspections, a music that is somewhere between epic and calm / chill music (yup that's possible :p) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtXCAjeRMiQ

Time rifts: This is a track that was inspired by what M.Zimmer did for interstellar, with an amazing job on the sound design made by Blue note from A Symphony of two: https://youtu.be/pdLHuoTwDmc?list=RDpdLHuoTwDmc (This isn't exactly orchestral, but it was composed with the same spirit)

Relaxing sunny day: This one is a solo project by myself, mostly composed of solos played by a trumpet, a guitar and then a piano. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vBOoXINAtk

A Special Somepny This was published on hearth and hooves day (no shit sherlock), it was initially inspired by what Williams did on the star wars love theme, but kinda moved away from it with the final product https://youtu.be/d18z2-cStJg?list=PLsLbjabKqPf9a_37AcvRG1woJzgRCMLYj

Anomaly: this one is absolutely not orchestral, but Blue note does this too, so here it is its a dark techno track with a lot of sound design: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIbUIAV53ko

Blue Note's Symphony #1: The Call Of The Wilds This one is Blue Note's Solo project, and I have to say that I'm amazed by this, it's a full symphony about leaving friends and familly to live an adventure in a quest to find inspiration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUWDO7ryHLU

We have many other tracks on our youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR3ApwLNK9t73tptIqHBhrA if you're interested, every single track published there can be downloaded from free on bandcamp if you like it :)

We also have a website if you want to learn more about us: http://ift.tt/2p9z716

TL:DR: As a member of the [Mostly] Orchestral composers group Fellowship Symphonies, I wanted to share it with you guys so, if you like orchestral music, come by our Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR3ApwLNK9t73tptIqHBhrA
