This Week On the Plounge (Fake Jib Edition)

So /u/Jibodeah has semi-mysteriously vanished, so I'm taking his place this week to do our weekly "what occurred on the Plounge in the past 7 14 days" thread. Holiday is too mysterious of a concept for me to comprehend, so all remains in chaos until he's back.

So let's get to it!

The Plounge, or more formally the MLP Lounge is /r/mylittlepony's sister subreddit. Designed to be a place where you can free of the tyranny of rules 3 and 4. A chill place for bronies or anyone to talk in a SFW chat centric environment. It can be found over at /r/MLPLounge. (most of us browse by /new though). Oh and BPM is nice to have. Even if you're allergic to using emotes yourself you'll miss a lot of extra context without it.

What some casual conversation with a sprinkling of ponies? Come over to this introductions thread and meet some people. Don't worry there's also a topic (this time it's about knockoffs!) so it ain't just "hi!" "hi" awkward silence.

Building a green roof horse shelter (update)

Hi everyone, I'm putting together a green roof horse shelter and thought I'd post the plans and results here. I've already started buying materials, but if you have any suggestions I'd be glad to hear them! Will post the results in probably a couple weeks depending on how busy work is.

The shed is limited by county regulations to 150 sq. ft. so I'm planning a footprint of about 12' x 12'. This will be located in a 7a Zone in Maryland, and while the sheltering provided is good, it isn't designed for extremes.

General Construction:

The base will be composed of Concrete Blocks with the holes horizontal to help with ventilation. I'm thinking that having some way to cover them during cold weather would be nice. Shouldn't be too hard to put a few strips of wood on hinges on the outside after the fact if it is necessary. Floor will be compacted dirt initially. Since it will be covered and slightly elevated from the surrounding land, mud shouldn't be an issue.

Framing will be treated southern yellow pine. 4x4s in the corners and at the entrance that are embedded a couple feet in the ground. No concrete planned. 2x4's for the walls. I'm thinking of rotating the 2x4's that sit at a plywood seam so that the flat edge is parallel with the plywood. I know this isn't commonly done, but I'm not sure why. Will also have horizontal 2x4's along the top and bottom of the walls.

Walls will be southern yellow pine Plywood Panels. I don't know about sealing or painting it yet. I'm also going to try to get something like Wisteria or English Ivy to cover some of the walls.

Will have 2 windows on the back and one side wall. They will be 2.5" high and about 1.8" wide. Bottoms will be about 4.5" from the ground.

Left and right half walls at the entrance will have the other half on a hinge to flip up and close things off a bit more for bad weather.

Roof pitch is planned at 5 degrees (just over 1 in 12). Rafters will be 2x6's supported in the back with a 2x4 with a vertical 2x4 beneath each 2x6 and supported above the front wall with a 4x4 with 4x4 braces. The 4' overhang should hopefully counter sagging in the middle of the roof. The rafters will be notches to sit flat on the 2x4 and 4x4. I'm considering adding a second 4x4 in between these supports, but it's not currently planned.

For the living roof:

- Base will be treated .5" Plywood. 

- Waterproofing will be 14.5 mil (.37 mm) reinforced PVC Pool Liner. This is maybe a bit thin, but I don't expect it to be damaged and even if it did develop a minor leak somehow, I don't think it will matter for this application. This is a single sheet that will cover the roof with no seams and will drain to the gutters. I'll probably use 3M Spray Adhesive to make the liner stay put, but still be removable without destroying anything.

- Drainage/Water Retention/Root Barrier - I'm thinking of something called J-Drain. Can't find much info about it, but it seems like it would do the job well.

- Rock Barrier - I'll be using small rocks from around my property to make about 6" of border to help prevent roots getting to the edge of the roof. Will buy some gravel to fill in since I don't have anything smaller than a golf ball.

- Growing Media - I'm thinking about a base layer of some wood chips and on top of that a mix of 30% aged compost (from horse manure, yard waste, and kitchen waste), 60% local soil (pretty heavy in sand and silt), and about 10% Expanded Clay. This is quite a bit heavier on organic content than usually recommended, but I want to have a wider range of planting options.

Plants - I'd like to grow as many usable plants as possible. Oregano and Thyme seem to be pretty popular for green roofs. If I could find something that deters flies that would be appreciated by the horse I'm sure. Otherwise I figure I'll throw a wildflower mix in and see what happens.

What exactly is Starlight Glimmer's relation to the Mane 6?

I thought that, during the Season 5 finale, the Mane 6 were welcoming Starlight Glimmer to become one of them, i.e. forming a Mane 7. However, she seems to have a closer attachment to Twilight than to any of the other members. Is she still just a background character, more like Twilight's assistant than actually being best friends with anybody other than Trixie?

New draft...how to tell if she's broke to drive?

We just adopted a big beautiful Belgian. She's broke to ride and I was told she's broke to drive, but we're new to that world and I don't know how to verify it or tune her up. Before I go and spend hundreds (thousands?) on driving/working tack, are there any verbal or physical cues I can test out with her to see if she has driving or working experience?

In other words...what basic driving tasks can I ask her to do that will indicate that she has a driving background?

Time to hit a question somewhat out of left field, as this is something the show has not and likely will never address. I am nonetheless curious to hear your thoughts on the topic, both answering the question directly and its impact on Equestrian society in general. To be clear, this is unrelated to any discussion of real-life religions. Please don't turn this into a real-life religious debate, mmk?

So, do ponies actively believe themselves to be part of something reflecting some form of higher power or order? Well - jokes about the funeral scene back in Season 2 aside - they've certainly got some reason to. They're surrounded by fantastically powerful supernatural elements, whether the concept of Element-bearing chosen six or the way cutie marks work in the first place. Or, perhaps, would it swing the other way - surrounded by so many greater yet tangible forces, they would not regard them with any reverence?

Some possibilities:

• Alicorn worship. Theorized in the fandom for a long, long time. With their apparently unaging nature, incredible power, and penchant for watching over their subjects directly Celestia and Luna are potential points of both respect and fear. We've also heard their names used as expressions before, although how common this is isn't clear. It also doesn't give any thought to what they think about it - perhaps they don't want to be revered like that?

• Perhaps worship for Harmony itself as a kind of overriding force governing the world. Not just a passive "karma" that balances itself out, but a sort of semi-agency which actively directs to ensure everything turns out okay in the end. It's also easy enough to believe in context; events so often seem to turn out just right in the end despite blundering on the way there. If that is not because of the deliberate action of a pony, then what causes it?

• Alternatively, perhaps Harmony is not regarded as something divine or all-powerful so much as a sort half-philosophical, half-religious path for ponies to follow to ensure Equestria and the world remains in good working order. After all, the last time they really got into each other it resulted in everyone almost dying from ice-demons...

But maybe you have other ideas. Maybe you don't think they're religious at all. Either way, hit me with it!
