A bridle strap has been scored by its buckle. Have I over-conditioned?
I have a lovely Zilco Oregon bridle. It's about 2 years old. It's soft and supple and I try not to over or under condition it. It's my main bridle, gets used 5 times a week when I ride or lunge.
I swapped my bit out today and to my horror, one of the bit-straps (near the head-piece) has been damaged by the buckle. The hole is fine, but the buckle has dragged/sliced into the leather. I'd say the leather is 3/4 of the standard thickness at that point.
It is due a clean, but is not stiff or really dry.
Obviously I can't undo the damage. Alas. But I was wondering if this is a sign that I may have been over-conditioning or using the wrong products!
When I clean it, I use effax cleaner-conditioner, and wipe it with a sponge until it's got no more dust or sweat. Then I put on a light coat of effax balm. If there are any spots which drink in the balm, I add more. Being honest, this is my 2-3 monthly clean. It might get a wipe in the meantime, but not much.
Any input is appreciated, I try to buy good gear and treat it with lazy but appropriate respect :)
