My Little Pony Movie review (spoiler free)
So I had the pleasure of attending the early premier of the MLP Movie in New York. What did I think?
Short answer: Surprisingly good. Nothing groundbreaking but a damn enjoyable movie that both adults and kids will like.
Long answer: I won't get into any major spoilers. If you want some just ask me and I will use the filter but for now here is my analysis:
Plot: It follows the junior novel for the most part but a few things are changed up, and likely for the better. It is fairly predictable up until the third act. A major curveball or two is thrown. It's gets pretty emotional from that point on. It's not a really funny film but the humor that's there works for the most part.
Characters: You do get some that don't do much like Grubber and the Princesses (of course) but they are well develops for the most part. Chemistry is formed in groups of two which helps with so many characters. Storm King and Capper are entertaining as fuck and Tempest, while having a very similar backstory to Starlight, is much better executed as you can actually feel remorse for her.
Animation: 3D was fixed thankfully, looks absolutely amazing on the big screen. Surprising amount of violence toward the end.
Songs: Very well done. Feels like old Disney. Sequences fit the tones of the songs.
Overall it isn't a deep and mind-blowing piece like some wanted and the plot is kind of recycled everything else more than makes up for it. The message at the end is also a bit unconventional for an animated movie. Really feels like a 2D Disney movie.
I'd give it a 7.5 or 8/10. It would have had to really blow me away to score any higher. But for what it is it's impressive.
