Need some advice on buying a rescue horse
Husband and I are looking at purchasing a rescue horse. I have no experience other than some tours, but my husband grew up with them. The stallion is 16 years old and not gelded.
The background on the horse----the horse was neglected, under fed, and abused by the previous owner. Apparently the woman would tease him with food and was abusive. The guy who has him now has been working with him and there has been improvement.
The problems with the stallion---the stallion is very nervous around women and has issues with his teeth. When my husband and I went to look at it, he kept his ears pinned back around me and would stamp his feet. He refused to let me touch him, but let my husband pet him. After about an hour I was able to get him to warm up to me. He let me pet him and lead him around (I realize there is a huge difference between riding and petting a horse).
The guy said he was able to ride him, but he will occasionally buck.
I can see the potential in this horse, but he would need months of work and learning to trust us before we would consider taking him trail riding and possibly a year before even letting our children ride. The guy who has him now let's his children ride, but only when he personally around and not another adult.
As people with a small amount of experience with horses compared to others, do you think this horse would be a good match for a family or keep searching?
