Just a little story, sorry if it doesn't belong. My girlfriend has two horses and occasionally lets me ride with her, I have ridden 3 times in my adult life, once as a child. I'm not exactly skilled.
Got the little guy up to a canter and I was fairly comfortable.
He tripped. I lost the reins. Didn't I nearly have a heart attack. Managed to recover myself through sheer panicked scrabbling but Jesus that was a terrifying moment.
