The Pillars of Equestria - in seasons 5&6!
So I was re-watching the start of Season 6 the other day, and I caught something surprising. In s6e02, when Starlight and Sunburst are trying (and failing) to reconnect, Starlight makes an off-hand comment that "It's not like there's a spell that could magically compell us to pick up where we left off." Sunburst replies that there's several, and lists three spells: Mistmane's Material Amity, Rockhoof's Rapport, and Flash Prance's Fellowship. That's two of the Pillars, who won't be mentioned again until the next season! "Flash Prance" is probably a scrapped name for Flash Magnus, which would make three. Later that same episode, Sunburst lists two more spells to combine with the Crystalling and restore the Crystal Heart: Somnambula's Weather Abjuration and Fledgeling's Forbearance. Somnambula makes four! I suspect that "Fledgeling" isn't the name of that spell's creator, but rather a reference to the spell's target - a baby. This got me to wondering. With those four name drops, only one is missing - Meadowbrook! I checked out the MLP Wiki to see if I'd missed something. Lo and behold, she was mentioned even earlier! In s5e01, Starlight shows off her "Staff of Sameness" and claims that it's one of Meadowbrook's Nine Enchanted Items. Later, Twilight suggests that Meadowbrook was an "eastern unicorn" but that there were only eight Enchanted Items. That makes five! Add in Starswirl, who has been known since s2e04, and all six of the Pillars were mentioned long before their actual depiction in season 7. I love finding things like this - tiny, insignificant things that become very significant later. I wonder if writers were just fishing round for impressive names at the time, or if they had some actual plans for the Pillars as early as season 5. Were there other foreshadowings of major plots? Have there been name drops in season 7 that will be relevant in future seasons?
