#horses - #Outdoor Arena Maintenance Question

Outdoor Arena Maintenance Question

Hi everyone,

My husband and I had an arena put in this past April and from just about the moment we put it in, keeping the weeds OUT of the arena has felt like an impossible task. We dragged regularly (but with just a chain-link drag), I tried weed killer (because the horses do not have free roam of this space), I tried physically pulling weeds but that quickly became much too big of a task, I tried putting down black plastic for 7 weeks to kill the weeds, which mostly worked but now I just have a ton of dead weeds with intact root systems in my arena to get rid of. I read online that putting a ton of rock salt in the arena can help because salt makes it very difficult for plants to grow. I intend to try this to prevent FURTHER weed growth now that the black plastic attempt is said and done but was waiting until rock salt was available in stores. However, I still need to clear out all of the dead plants that are currently embedded in the arena.

From doing some additional research online, it seems like I should buy a disc attachment and disc the arena and get a harrowing drag to help prevent this in the future. Does anyone have any experience with disking an arena OR in dealing with the world's most persistent weeds? We have a lawn tractor and an SUV. It looks like there are disc attachments for lawn tractors but I'm worried that they won't work. So if anyone has a disc attachment that they recommend, I'd be interested in that as well. I am a little worried about disking because I don't want to disrupt the base of the arena, but I think if we're careful not to go too deep, we should be okay.

Thanks in advance for your arena/weed advice! Sometimes you just gotta come to this sub to learn from the experts. :)
