#mylittlepony - #Fan Theory: Ponies are Toxic

Fan Theory: Ponies are Toxic

No, I don't mean 'the brony community' nor am I suggesting the pony society is either. I have a theory that ponies, as a race, are physically toxic. Allow me to explain.

I've recently been playing a game called Niche, not related to ponies. It's a game where you guide and breed a tribe of fictional creatures with a huge focus on evolution and genetics. One of the traits these creatures can evolve is a "Toxic Body". Besides having several in-game benefits it causes their coloration to take on bright colors. You can see from this scene the difference between the toxic body creatures and the normal ones.

While fictional, the game draws on real life adaptations of real life animals. While many animals are colored in a way to give them some kind of camo, animals like the poison dart frog are brightly colored to warn potential predators that they are highly toxic.

Now let's take a look at our favorite brightly colored equines.

Bright, highly-contrasting unmistakable colors that would stand out like a sore thumb in any environment.

"But Pinstar, why would the ponies need such an evolutionary adaptation?" you might ask.

Let's look at the world that the ponies live in. As established by cannon, ponies are herbivores. Prey. Their world is also populated by large, powerful carnivorous creatures. Dragons, Manticores, Chimeras, even Gryphons. Creatures that could make a meal of a pony.

"But Pinstar, there is no evidence that a Gryphon would even try to eat a pony!"

Agreed. And I don't think they ever would. Not in present-day equestria. But what about Aeons ago... when Ponies were but primitive race. The cave-mare era, if you will. What if something like the primitive version of Gryphons did prey on them? After all, many of the other races in the world are based on their mythological accounts. And according to mythology: Gryphons hunted horses

So, in addition to strength, magic and flight: what if their bright colors and poisonous bodies were an evolutionary adaptation to discourage beasts that would have otherwise preyed on them.

And of course: Just as the ponies adapt, so do their predators. What are the two things we've seen feed on ponies? Changelings and Centaurs which feed on emotions and magic respectively. Two things that would not be protected by a body that was physically toxic. (and before someone points out the Tatzil Worm trying to eat Twilight and Cadence, Fluttershy has stated they have tremorsense and thus wouldn't see a pony's bright colors to be warned by them)

That is why I theorize that a pony's physical body is highly toxic and that is why they are all so brightly colored.
