What exactly are the Shadowbolts?
All I know is that they were just an illusion caused by Nightmare Moon in the second episode of season 1, they haven't been mentioned or appeared ever since in the cartoon, yet Rainbow Dash wears a costume based on them in "Luna Eclipsed" and they've appeared in other media and as toys and lastly as the name of the rival team in Equestria Girls Friendship Games. Are they really nothing at all but one of Nightmare Moon's challenges or could there be more lore behind them?
