#horses - #OTTB- Just started working with them- Help me see the light at the end of the tunnel

OTTB- Just started working with them- Help me see the light at the end of the tunnel

I just started beginning training and lessons to learn how to work with OTTB rescues at an amazing stable just outside of Denver, CO. (If anyone would be interested in hearing more about the rescue stable please let me know, but I'll get straight to the point here.)

These horses are something else. Just today I told my trainer we need to work on MY confidence because my nerves are getting wrecked. I consider myself an experienced rider, but I'm sure any of you who have taken up this work as well can relate. They react to so many things. If in the cross ties too long they freak out, if trying to mount too soon they freak, they will go from a walk to a full speed gallop in a nanosecond if any contact or directions are unclear. I'm getting scared to ride them, but I know they need my help. They need to be worked and not just sporadically as they are now. (Short staffed on trainers.)

So, I guess what I'm here for is to get it off my chest- it's scary working with these guys and it breaks my heart that they seem over bred and need so much help after getting off the track.

Any words of encouragement or success stories or even sound advice is welcome ...I don't want to give up on these beautiful creatures but I'm starting to think they may not be for me.

Thanks!
